GPS tracks and trails Spaceland Apr 6 2007

Recommended Posts

From a couple of jumps at Spaceland yesterday.

Tracking about 1.2 miles W to E at the top. The airplane track is in there also.

A retired pilot chute was used to make a mesh pocket on the sleeve of my jumpsuit. A signal was maintained most of the time inside the plane by keeping the unit next to the window up front. Otter for Jump 1 and Caravan for Jump 2.

Cool. I just got a Foretrex 201 and haven't had the chance to play with it yet. However, I signed up for Google Earth Plus so I could upload the GPS track into it. Any way you can save the track files and upload them somewhere?

What kind of software image viewer must be used to display a "kmz" file?

Google Earth. Pay the twenty bucks for a year. Well worth it John. You can overlay your GPS tracks on images. I know you have some.

To be clear: the free version of Google Earth should open any KMZ file, no matter how it was created.

If you want to _create_ a KMZ file using the track data from a GPS, one way is to get the pay version of Google Earth. I also think there are some free third-party tools that will let you create a KMZ file from your GPS data and display it in the free version of Google Earth.

OK, Google Earth GuRus... I've been saving my file with the tracks, but when I upload it here the tracks vanish. Anyone???

I see that you got it to work, and I don't know which buttons to tell you to push in Google Earth to make it work, but I do know you can check it before you upload it if you want.

1) Save the KMZ file somewhere on your computer as you usually do.
2) Copy the KMZ file to some other file name, and give it the extension ".zip". Example: test.zip .
3) Open up the zip file. (Windows XP and Vista, and I think Mac OS X, will do this if you just click on it like a normal file. Otherwise, use something like WiZ if you can't drive a computer without a mouse, or unzip if you can.)
4) There should be one file named doc.kml inside the zip file. Open this file with your favorite text editor. (Such as Notepad under Windows or TextEdit under Mac OS X.)
5) Look at the file. If your tracks are in there, there will be a big list of numbers in x,y,z format and the file will be rather long. If they're not, you won't see the list of numbers and the file will be maybe 20 lines, tops.

If your tracks are in the file, upload the KMZ file as normal. If they're not, go back to Google Earth and try saving the KMZ file again.
