I have a simple MCL tear and I'm not out of the sport of skydiving..whats the difference? really? Did you mean to say "I'm out of the sport..." (without the "not")? Those professionals have fitness trainers that help them get back into shape, fancy healing substances like steroids, and powerful prescription pain medications... But in the end, they're sacrificing their bodies for dollars. And may experience a lifetime of difficulties afterwards. How is it that you can you do all that backpacking and mountain climbing with this injury, but not skydive? (Trying to understand what an "MCL tear" is...) kelpdiver 2 #3 May 30, 2007 football and basketball players have to be able to make sharp cuts in their direction of travel, using their knees. Skydivers mostly go in a straight line, or turn using their toggles or risers.

I resemble that remark! I just paid $400 to a physical therapist - on professional skydiver wages - to ease the pain of an old knee injury.
druvaughn 0 #5 May 31, 2007 The MCL controls (as I was told) controls the lateral stability of the knee. I tore mine and was able to hold the top of my leg stiff and everything below the knee would wobble... Using it is fine until the joint is out of line when you put weight on it, then you run into larger problems. Nothing a really impressive tape job or knee brace can't fix. Being a tendon/joint issue, the solution isn't steroids, its Cortizone!!!- - "Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical."

But thats just me and I'm not a doctor and that was NOT advice.__ My mighty steed
nikejumper 0 #7 May 31, 2007 I have played D1 football and have some good friends in the NFL. To these athletes that play these sports all they have is the sport, the rush, of playing in front on millions on people, its also how they feed their family. Most (more or less a semi-educated guess) of these athletes do not have a (full) college education. So they look at playing with an injury as I have to make the money while I can and while I'm on top of my game. As said before, they have some of the best Docs in the world helping them heal in-between games. Should you jump with a messed up MCL... nice easy landings and nothing that would be pushing it... Remember its not going to get better jumping... JeffIs it saturday yet?
