What makes you keep skydiving?

Recommended Posts

The challenge. I'm a 4-way guy, and there's a nearly infinite amount to learn, just about that tiny aspect of the sport. Every 4-way jump I learn something, and the more I learn and the better I get, the more I want to learn even more and get even better.

When I'm not busy being an "RW cyborg" I also do some organizing, am working on a coach rating, and am slowly teaching myself to swoop. I have found each of these things to have the same nearly infinite potential as 4-way... there's always a ton more to learn.

Also, I like that the sport is small enough that the best in the world are friendly. In 2005, I went to rantoul, and jumped with Airspeed on a bunch of casual organized dives... many went well. I was just another jumper, but I went to Eloy for the christmas boogie that year, and every one of them remembered my face, and some remembered my name. Could you say the same in any "mainstream" sport? It means a lot.

the hung over mornings, smell of jet fuel, the thrill of possibly dying but not, watching ppl eat shit when they talk smack all day long, the beer, reading the incident reports, the beer, learnoing about how ppl really are, and waking up in a tent because its so fucking hot next to you!!!!!
"your the shit till you eat it !!!!!!!! damn that wall hurts..."

Ever since I started skydiving, I look at a lot of things differently, and notice things I did not before. Any aircraft I see I now evaluate with the 'I'd jump that' phrase. Flags, trees, blowing dust are all now wind indicators. Watched "Independence Day" last night. Seeing the landing that Will Smith made after punching out of his plane, I say, "Terrible PLF".
Seems everything now has a connection to skydiving now.
What makes me keep skydiving? Flying my body. Flying my canopy. Getting that sweet landing. Seeing the passion that others at the DZ have about this thing we do.
Having made my first jump at 51, I know that old dogs can indeed learn new tricks.
Begin a very stubborn person, I WILL NOT let that new ZP canopy win the 'get in the bag' game.
Having that smile that will not leave my face and thinking, "DAMN, I LOVE THIS!!!"

Let's jump!

It's usually to windy for the other extreme sport that I love. Stacking BB's. Seriously it's because when I'm skydiving I'm not thinking of anything else. It clears my head of all the day to day bullshit. And I love it.

I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.

Lotsa reasons, but therapy is a good one.

And because if I don't, then I gradually turn into more and more of an irritable subhuman bastard until my flatmate/workmates/friends physically force me to go to the DZ so I become livable-with again.

"Go! Just get out!"
*points* "Look! Blue skies! Now fuck off!"
