Kiakambala 0 #1 May 31, 2007 Can anyone describe the feelings they have during freefall. I.e. what the freefall actually feels like to you, what it is about it you like so much etc? Sorry if this seems stupid i am just curious as everyone feels and takes things in differently.
CanuckInUSA 0 #2 May 31, 2007 - We fall through the sky very fast. - Because of this there is a lot of relative wind generated around our bodies. - Because of the wind it is very loud. - Because of the wind, it's easy to get knocked around the sky if you don't counteract one body movement with another. The secret to freefalling is: 1) Relax. 2) Turn off the loud wind generated noise. 3) Continue to relax. 4) Fly your body within your skill and experience levels. 5) Be altitude aware. 6) Have fun ... and don't die. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
MB38 0 #3 May 31, 2007 Physically? The next time you're on the freeway, open the window and stick your arm out. Imagine that all over your body at twice the speed... to the point that you're fully supported by it. In the car example, if you move your hand in a certain way to create lift... it'll push your arm up. Conversely, if you move it in the opposite way, it'll push your arm down. Imagine that control over every surface of your body. It doesn't feel like falling to me as much as it feels like floating in air. Lots of air.I really don't know what I'm talking about. Jazzthieve 0 #4 May 31, 2007 My feelings during freefall, hmm....I guess you mean what my thoughts are..... I'm quite new to the sport also but the things I feel are freedom and complete enjoyement mixed with still a small amount of nervousness. At same time I try to remember my position in the sky relative to the other jumpers who exited before and after me so I don't come flying in in their path and have a canopy open right below me. Sometimes I also get a bit bored during freefall, due to my low jumpnumber I'm not allowed to jump with anyone I like so mostly I'm jumping alone and there's only so much you can do when you're alone and don't have alot of freefall capabilities. mnskydiver688 0 #6 May 31, 2007 Physically I would laying stomach down on a water bed. As far as thoughts go during freefall it varies quite a bit. During my hundredth jump I looked at the funnelled formation and everybody spread out and thought "this isn't quite how I saw my 100th in my head but this is fun anyway", and a big grin formed on my face. When you are making formations you are thinking about what your next move is going to be and what needs to be done to get there. During one solo I looked off into the horizon and took in the sunset and cloud formations in the distance and just soaked it all up.Sky Canyon Wingsuiters

Haha, you don't like your instructors/coaches? Your profile says you've got your A, so unless they're doing solely advanced stuff why can't you jump with the folks you like? Jazzthieve 0 #9 May 31, 2007 It's just in Belgium they've got this system (they call it warp-jumps) I have to do 10 warp jumps with an instructor before I'm even allowed to do 2ways, but I'm hoping 5 warp-jumps would be enough (I have to pay for the instructors jumps). In the mean time I'm gathering jumps on my own.

pinkfairy 0 #17 June 1, 2007 Well... First it feels like falling from an airplane, then it's more like flying, and I fly around and play with my friends, and just when it's getting really, really good, and we could stay there forever, comes the separation altitude, and that's often kinda sad, I just have to cut off in the middle of the fun, and then I get away as fast as I can, and by the time I start pulling handles, the ground has gotten kinda big, and I feel a big "Ka-pop" above me, and that's my sabre, and after having taken a look at it, I fly it down to the ground. And pack and do it again. Sometimes when I track to get away, I think "Wow! that was awesome! Don't ruin this good experience by forgetting to pull!" At other times, I just feel that I do nothing right, I feel like a helpless mass of meat falling through the big blue. At other times I feel like a super-skydiver, who can outfly everyone. Sometimes I really, really mess up, and last time I did that, it was videotaped. Oddly enough, I wanna do the maneuvres I failed again. Maybe even with video. Look, my logbook has entries as long as this for most jumps. I could go on and on. Get some more jumps, my friend. PS: And no: I don't hear anything in freefall. Never have. If I try to shout, it feels like my voice is drowned in silence. Try it, it's cool! Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you?
Trae 1 #18 June 3, 2007 in reply to " Can anyone describe the feelings they have during freefall." ........................................ You,ve probably heard of the `"fight or flight" adrenalin surge us humans and many other animals have in potentially stressful situations. As skydivers we switch this on at will with each jump but its more like the "flight or flight" response. Over time this can be replaced with a steadier head space where you may feel a sense of heightened awareness compared to early jumps. Time can slow down and your senses can expand to the point that you feel very much on top of things with any previous nerves replaced with competence and true confidence in your abilities. This is a very much better feeling than the often false confidence felt and demonstrated by low jump number people after they,ve survived a hundred or two jumps. used to be said that if you,re thinking of anything else but your skydive during a skydive then you shouldn,t be there as you become a danger to yourself and others. Wondering in freefall where your car keys are or what your girlfriend is up to is a big message to get the ground issues out of the way or at least put on a good hold. time warping when skydives go really well are one of the best feelings going. denete 3 #21 June 4, 2007 I don't know about freefall (because I'm still having to think about my tasks), but I'll definitely tell you about my feelings on exit. I can still replay my first exit in my mind and my body goes through a mini-version of the feeling that I had at that moment. I really can't describe what it was like to let go of the plane. If I really tried, I would type sentence after sentence saying the same essential things. It was a moment where I found absolute peace and absolute terror. Your body freaks out for a second and your senses just go calm. It reminded me of the movie The Abyss, when Ed Harris has to inhale (drown himself in) a breathable liquid. His body tried to fight it no matter how much he knew it was alright. That feeling was possibly the best part of my first jump. - DavidSCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)
