Balloon Jump - Paperwork?

Recommended Posts

I have been offered a free balloon jump. However, I do not know what I have to do to make it legal for the balloon pilot and myself. Can anyone tell me who I have to contact and what I have to fill out?

PS: I tried searching the forums but could not find what I was looking for.

You know what, after 27 years in the sport I don't know what you have to do for this one.:$:S

How do you file a notam when you don't know where your going?

What I know has been done is the chase crew asks permission of the property owner just like landing the balloon. But beyond that? I'm not sure.

Hmmmm,

I bet Tom knows the answer.

I'm old for my age.

As a former balloon pilot turned jumper, this is what we have always done:

-We gather in the morning and make sure the conditions will be good for the balloon flight

-Wait til the sun comes up (as it can dramatically change wind speed/direction) and then start sending up pie-balls (helium balloons) and watch where they go, where wind layers are, etc.

-Then we decide where we are going to launch from. i have never had to file to notam myself, but it seems once we have decided we are going, is when that is taken care of, something along the lines of "Skydiving activity approx. __ miles south of ___ airport begining at ___ hour until ___ (usually starting about 20 minutes after the call, until about an hour after that... it is usually quite quick to altitude)

That's how it always seems to go around here. Like I said, I have never been fully in charge, though. Around here, the only responsibility for the jumper is to show up,and HELP THE BALLOON CREW! (If you can, try and land and store your gear, then try and catch up with the crew to help put the balloon away, it's a lot of work. Especially if you are getting to go for free!)
It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

Paperwork for a balloon jump??

Dunno.

The only paper work I had to do for the one balloon jump I've ever made had to do with the bandaging myself up following the the ass-chewin' I got from MJOSparky after taking 15 seconds off of a balloon from 3000'.
:D

Ummm... anyway, in theory if you were jumping from a balloon at an established Drop Zone, why would any extra paperwork be involved?

Okay, now I realize that in reality the likelyhood of actually landing on the DZ even if the balloon is lauched from the DZ is kinda slim, so, research into paper work or what not to see what it would take to make it legal is a good idea. I'd like to know what the correct answer is.
