What if USPA didn't exist? Would we be better off or not?

If uspa didn't exist, skydivers would form another national organization.

The most insightful post in this thread.

:S, yeah, really helps the intent of the OP

Do you disagree with me?

Nope, I 100% agree that we'd have gotten organized eventually and it might be called something else and do the exact same thing.

I just thought it was a bit obvious - and you are more enlightening when you're subtle vs when you are obtuse. But, sometimes what's obvious to some may not be obvious to others.

(on the other hand, listening to posting on the BSR proposal, maybe an organization might not be formed - it would never get past the well meaning and off target filibustering by those that refuse to read the charter)

Sounds like what's happened/happening to general /sport aviation.

Not sure what you mean. The new Sport Pilot ticket and LSA seem to be a move in the right direction.

It's just a return to almost the freedom of flying that existed 40 years ago. The population is up, but the number of active pilots is way down. Petty and excessive FAA regulation is the main reason, IMO.

And let's not forget excessive litigation, which contributed to people like Cessna ceasing to produce small aircraft in the first place, before GARA & the statue of repose came into being.

Self-regulation/limitation for fear of lawsuit is a very real thing, whether it's aviation or business we're talking about (he says, having recently faced a frivolous lawsuit himself).

Of course, the attorneys and sue-happy society are only one part of the problem...but whenever there's a big national decline, such as what happened in GA, I'm usually inclined to believe that lawyers are playing a prominent role. ;)

I completely agree with you, and believe that the USPA likely kept the government away from skydiving.

Oooohhhh! Yeah, you would have to have the flight physical. The silver bullet...just bend over and take it like a man.
All very good points, Kallend. I wa sthginking that the regs would be stiffer under a direct FAA management. But, I had not thought of just how strict. You're right...who would want to?

"I'm not going to support this USPA thing! They want to ban skydiving."

"USPA will never work. No one will pay attention to anything they say."

"USPA will never work. They will legislate the sport to death, and no one will be able to escape their tyrannical rule."

"I'd support an organization that set training standards, basic safety rules and set up competitions - but not this thing."
