The illusion that when you're in traffic and coming in on final that nobody would be enough of an asshole to swoop anywhere near you. Walt

Yeah, I know all the Danny worshipers would love for the whole thing to go away, but until we see a culture change in our sport, I'll continue to hold him up as an example of something that no skydiver should aspire to. IMO, you're attitude is part of the reason I think a culture change is absolutely needed in the sport. I don't mean this as an attack against you--I respect you and think you're a great guy--but I think he stopped deserving respect the moment he killed Bob Holler. Walt I see no one sweeping anything under the carpet. Danny killed Bob. Disrespecting him over and over again is having no effect on the safety of our sport. [disclaimer]I didn't know either of those guys and I'm not saying this with any emotion or reference to the specific accident, which was tragic[/disclaimer] We all fuck up. If somebody stops deserving respect because they fucked up then I don't think I know a respectable person. It just seems a pretty strong choice of words...Of course we need to look at past mistakes and learn from them, but saying that he doesn't deserve respect is pretty harsh....Wow, this is deep for the Bonfire.I got nuthin

I certainly didn't mean for this to turn into an extended threadjack. Yes, we all fuck up. Usually, nobody gets hurt and when somebody does, it's normally the person who fucked up. The way the incident in Dublin happened, it could have just as easily been me, you, or any other jumper because Danny acted with careless disregard for his own safety and the safety of others. I don't think anybody questions that. Here's the part I don't get. At what point does someone become a "bad guy" that gets shunned by the community? A while back there was a non-jumping incident in which a dotcommer, SalsaJohn, allegedly attacked another jumper at the dz with a deadly weapon. The reaction in the bonfire was swift and severe condemnation. John didn't kill anyone. Danny did. Is it really not a reflection on Danny's character that he "inadvertently" committed what amounts to a murder-suicide? I honestly don't get it. I could understand if someone said something like, "I remember what he was like before he turned into whatever he was on his last jump". Instead, he is considered a great guy who just happened to fuck up and kill himself and someone else. No big deal.Is it somehow ok to kill yourself and someone else with callous disregard if you're well-liked? Why does anyone think that someone like that has a place in our community? I can understand someone sticking up for a friend, but this seems way overboard. Would the Danny worshipers be so adamant about protecting his "good name" if he had been convicted of some horrendous crime, like child molesting or rape/murder? I'm starting to think the answer to that would be "yes" because they liked him. Walt
JohnMitchell 16 #21 July 26, 2007 I can't believe i'm sticking my nose in here. I'm not a swooper, and I can't stand the idea of being taken out at 200 feet by some idiot on a 270. But what Danny did was an accident, not an intentional act. The irresponsibility of swooping in traffic can be debated, and I agree that we do need a culture change to prevent future incidents like these. I've had friends screw up and kill people. It breaks your heart but you never quit loving them.
