northcave 0 #1 August 16, 2007 On a jump, and once you have opened.... is there anything wrong and will a DZ frown upon it, if you fly close to another canopy. Of course i mean if you have already agreed it with whoever you are flying close to. So if the other canopy knows you're there and flying by the side of each other... anything wrong with that? PhreeZone 20 #4 August 16, 2007 If the experience levels are there it can be done. That said there have been many wraps and a few deaths from colliding while trying to play under canopy in the last few years.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Peej 0 #5 August 16, 2007 I see no problem with it as long as the jump or in this case, the flight, has been properly briefed. That said i have only ever done this with with another highly experienced pilot with many more jumps than i have. When i first got my Velo i did a few high clear and pulls (11 grand) and followed my mentor through 270's and a bunch of canopy drills we had thoroughly briefed on the ground. It's all proximity flying though and no bumping of end cells, etc. Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky

peregrinerose 0 #7 August 16, 2007 I like doing some proximity flying, but I have only done it with 2 other jumpers... one is my husband and we know each other extremely well in the sky and had a game plan well in advance. The other was as part of a canopy control course. I've always learned a LOT about canopy flight by doing proximity flying like that... gives great information about exactly what different control inputs are doing when you have a frame of reference right there to use. kkeenan 14 #8 August 16, 2007 Quote So if the other canopy knows you're there and flying by the side of each other... anything wrong with that? The obvious hazard is collision. As long as each person is paying attention, it shouldn't be a problem. This assumes that each knows the plan beforehand and that each has the experience needed. There is actually a discipline in skydiving called Canopy Formation jumping, in which the participants hold onto each other's canopies and build formations, similar to those in freefall. The attached photo shows the World Record 85-Way, built in 2005. Watch for the 100-Way coming in November.Kevin K._____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Floats18 0 #9 August 16, 2007 Haha I can't believe I missed my chance to make fun of Ryan. They should have a new reality show: THE RT FACTOR Too terrifying for network TV I MISS YOU GUYS! To Un-Hijack the thread tho: I say if you want to fly in formation/close proximity get some coaching!!! Do not attempt any close flying below your hard deck! Plan the dive and dive the plan. Do not wear any snagable equipment and always prepare for the worst. Have fun out there kids, just don't turn yourself into a visual aid for future dumbasses that want to suck at staying in planes!--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever DiverDriver in Training

Oh my, that sounds scary. I picture in my mind, 4 or 8 or more people all walking out to the airplane. Unshaven, unwashed, with all their tuck tabs untacked and bits of canopy sneaking out. The rigs a little bigger than those around them. Maybe a lot of laughing and giggling (but in an unwholesome way). I see protecs, protecs everywhere, and duct tape, and long pants maybe a couple with their cuffs stuff in their socks. Long sleeve shirts on hot days, gloves. Drinks and sandwiches in sweatshirt pockets....... All freaky and wierd. I see people using odd terms, like "pinwheel", "down planes" and "retractable pilots chutes", "cascades" and "cross connectors". Nope, just my little imaginary visuals makes it a bit too freaky... Last weekend, we had a 30-way funnel. It's just like a freefall funnel, except that there seems to be a lot more things to get tangled up with. (30 canopies, for instance) Amazingly, there was only one cutaway on that one. We're planning to use that video as our new recruiting ad.Kevin_____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ? rehmwa 2 #12 August 17, 2007 We've been collecting rigs and introducing pups this year. It's been fun. Nothing fancy, mostly rotations and downplanes. Pretty hard to keep it going, but worth it. I think we'll have a good 8-way base built for next year. ...
