flr169 0 #1 August 16, 2007 canopy course starts 8am friday morning 6hrs away. thats right 6 hours away..... was planing on leaving thursday afternoon, drive there and set up my tent....do a little sociallizing and get a decent sleep...... late last night my nose and head got all plugged up.. went to work wednesday morning and it just got worse... went out at lunch time and got some pills to help... sorta worked, and i can breath at least.... I go and play poker at a local bar, which happens every wednesday.....about 2 hours thru and I'm now caughing a bit and I know my throat is going be killing me in the morning....also I got the shakes / chills really bad...... I'm home now with a hot neo-citrin and a cold pill and off for a hot bath before bed..... I had intentions of leaving tommorrow afternoon.... now all I have to do is 5 jumps with the course ( scott miller ) so I figured I would do hop and pops and pull right away...say 5 secs out of door.... I don't think it will hurt my sinus's or anything else.... its a long drive and min.....$180 for course and jumps.... I don't think all of this will affect my judgements but i could be wrong..... looking for peoples sugestions / comments if they have gone thru the same thing...sorta... I haven't put any money down, but I know i will be cursed for last minute, cancel.... sorry for long speeeeeech...... NWFlyer 2 #3 August 16, 2007 Quoteso I figured I would do hop and pops and pull right away...say 5 secs out of door.... That's what everyone in the class will do - the jumps aren't full-altitude anyway. Scott's class is great, but if you're feeling like crap, you might not get as much out of it. And you have a good reason for a last-minute cancellation and you don't just no-show, it should be less of a problem (especially if you are conscientious enough to call first thing tomorrow - there might be a wait-list for the class and you'll make someone else happy by opening up a slot)."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Morrison79 0 #4 August 16, 2007 A few times in the last couple of years I have gotten sick before vacation, work trip, things you can't back out of. I go to my docter and he gives me a shot of some strong ass antibotic and something else ( i don't remember what else) but within 24 hours i felt good as new. bob.dino 1 #5 August 16, 2007 You'll learn a lot from Scott's ground course even if you can't jump. Wrap up well from now 'til then, take Vitamin C and you might be surprised how well you feel. Oh, and give Scott a big sloppy kiss from me.
dmetz 0 #6 August 16, 2007 Bundle up and go for a run. It will hurt like hell but, for me at least, it clears up any congestion and fights off the fever in no time. Run and sweat for at least 20-30 minutes, then rest for a while and take care of yourself, ie. drugs, vitamins, liquids, etc. You should feel like a million bucks by 8 am Friday. Oh, and don't forget to stretch well, muscles don't act the same when you're sick either. By the way, I'm not a doctor but I am an American man, so I think I know everything and I'm always right._________________________________________ "If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?" ChrisL 2 #7 August 16, 2007 If your only symptom is a stuffy nose, then get some nasal spray decongestant. It will totally open up your nasal passages and sinuses. Far better than pills will. Don't keep using it though, or it can make the problem worse. Use it for the class. It will give you the better part of 12 hours of relief which should be more than enough for the class, and when it wears off go back to the pills. Of course if you have other cold-like symptoms, reschedule your class for another time. You will get more out of it if you are healthy, plus a day of jumps will likely aggravate your illness and you will suffer more.

Beerlight 0 #9 August 16, 2007 Unlike what some people say, the greatest pressure change is from sea level to 10,000 feet. So, yes it would matter. Not worth damaging your ears/sinuses. Re-sched.

Re-sched. 0-3000m - 1013 to 700 - 31% drop 3-6000m - 700 to 470. - 33% drop. 6-9000m - 470 to 310. - 34% drop. (not very different) The ascent is not the concern. If the canopy deploys right out the door, the change in pressure may be tolerable. But if there is any problem out the door (malfunction) and the person gets to terminal, you're combining painful ears (which could cause vertigo) and an emergency, so it's a higher risk. Beerlight 0 #14 August 17, 2007 You need to keep running the numbers. As we ascend, pressure falls from 760 mmHg at sea level, to approximately 550 mmHg at 7,000 feet, to approximately 522 mmHg at 10,000 feet, and 380 mmHg at 18,000 feet. Sea Level = 760 mmHg 10,000 feet = 522 mmHg Difference is: 238 mmHg The most change is from sea level to 10K. From 10K to 20K the change is only a 172 mmHg change. From 20K to 30K the change is only 124 mmHg. From 30K to 40K it's 85 mmHg. It's "aviation" pressure changes not diving schedules.
