peek 21 #1 September 10, 2007 I finally got to land on a tuffet. The only other time I had access to a tuffet is when one was brought to the local DZ for an accuracy meet, but there was no wind that day so I didn't try it out. Spent the weekend at Skydive Chicago just to check out that part of the USPA Nationals competition. Got on some practice loads with the accuracy jumpers and they let me shoot accuracy onto the tuffet. They are a nice group, and even provided some tips. I don't have a specific accuracy canopy but I can do OK with my big 9 cell. Talk about pressure! After landing they all pack really close to the tuffet, so when you look down at it from 1000-2000 feet you realize you had better be able to get really close, or else forget about doing it. (It would be really bad form to have to abort your approach and yell, "heads up", or something.) But there was a good wind so I at least flopped on it. It was pretty cool. Makes a person think about getting an accuracy canopy. (You know what I just realized? There is no style and accuracy forum on dropzone.com.)
airtwardo 7 #2 September 10, 2007 It was pretty cool. Makes a person think about getting an accuracy canopy. Quote NOW ya thell me! My Pre-2nd time on a tuffet was a few years back the the Lew Sanborn meet. I have a couple of old accuri canopies, I couldn't FIND the Challenger anywhere so I packed up the 252...hadn't jumped it in 10 years or better. First few rounds were interesting...FUN, but also interesting. The toggle pressure is 10X what I remembered and I was getting pretty shakie in 3/4 brakes...I wasn't gonna win anyway, so the last round I jumped my 170 Zpo just to see how IT would do in a steep approach...NOT a good plan!!It stalled... or rather I STALLED it about 30-40 feet over the top and went back into free-fall...Hit the airbag flat on my back, did a two an a half gainer through the lines and landed the 2nd time on the ground with my frap hat covered melon being the first point of contact.Took me two hours of workin' with a crowbar to get my eyes uncrossed! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

pchapman 279 #4 September 11, 2007 QuoteIt was pretty cool. Makes a person think about getting an accuracy canopy. Given a choice I'll usually pick up my rig with the 88 in it, not the rig with the 282. Still, acccuracy approaches are a good opportunity for careful concentration & focus that are absent from many other more ordinary landings. A good challenge in other words. And Gary, perhaps you saw the thread on the PD Optimum reserve which got sidetracked into discussing how a couple PD jumpers were shooting accuracy with their Optimum 113s at the Canadian Nationals. They had to learn fast and were having a blast. (http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2910184)

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
