Flag container

Might try flight concepts. I don't know if they'd make what you want. But any sewing rigger ought to be able to make up what you're looking for.

Flight Concepts does make CANOPY bags for flags. This is the system you see when the flag is above the jumper behind the lines. The flag is packed in a tubular bag under the bottom skin and a line much like a flag pole line runs up to the canopy and back down. I have instructions from the knights on how to make one but a screwed something up when I tried 15 years ago.:S Caused some funky openings. But it does work well for small flags when it's done right.;) And it isn't a cutaway system.

Of course you could always just attach a big towed flag WITHOUT a cutaway system.;):S:o (I'm joking, I'm joking!)

The couple of times I've done a flag that way I've just stowed in it my jumpsuit. You may be able to find an off the shelf bag that would work by searching for "rappelling rope leg bag" Most are too big but I saw a couple that might work.

I got the instructions from the Knights rigger in 1989. His name is escaping me but it wasn't Neil. I do remember a quote of his. He was trying to convince the Style and Accuracy guys to go to piggy backs so they could use square reserves. "If you open a round reserve your still in an emergency situation."

On of these days I'm going to have to dig out the one I made and figure out what I did wrong. 15 years more experience may help me figure it out.;)

>>We can not use a cutaway system for flags in Sweden.
Screw that. Get one anyway and if you have to chop it at least you'll be around to beg forgiveness . . .

And be really careful with these bags. Some years ago I was in the Perris Otter with a AFF student and few people in front of us was Larry (drawing a blank on his last name – was it Langdon)? He was trying out a flag bag prior to a demo from altitude. I watched him fiddling with it all the way up and in hindsight I can say he looked sort of nervous about it.

I gave him a friendly thumbs up as he went through the door and about a minute later he was dead. I don’t recall exactly what happened but somehow the flag bag fouled his main and he couldn't get rid of either one.

If it was the incident I'm thinking of, the flag snaked out of the container during free-fall, he pulled into it, chopped the main but not the flag which was entangled, the reserve just made it a bigger trailing mess...

I remember talking at length was several demo jumps following that...a lotta guy had differing approaches to solving that problem, we redesigned all our containers with oversewd corners covered in Velcro, numerous locking loops along the final flap, and 2nd flap to cover all the loops and release cable, and a more user friendly QR.

Oh...ya better get a carry permit for that thumb. :P

Nick,
I remember a fatality into downtown with a jumper that clipped his flag bag on after he donned his rig. He had a leg mounted PC and the bridle was trapped. After he deployed he had a PC in tow. If I remember correctly he was training for an upcoming demo. 15 years ago maybe???[:/]

Couple hundred years ago~;)

We were running to the plane to make a demo jump into a car dealership...

I was more concerned with my own gear, but as Shorty Janacek climbed in... 'something' just didn't look right.

I couldn't put my finger on it, just that little feeling in the back of your mind. :|

I followed Shorty out the door of the 180 and realized that he done the same thing...flag over the RLS. :o

The reserve open clean...but we all learned something that day about checking each other's gear...and that as all 'pilots' know...if something feels wrong, then there's usually something wrong! :$

I have thought about that. I have been jumping a system I am looking for for the past 15 jumps. The one we have at my dz was made by a rigger that is no longer working in the sport and the dzo won't sell it to me. After jumping the system I feel it quite safe. the container is closed very well and I don't do anything with the flag till I am sure I have a good flying canopy then pull the flag and attach. If after opening I don't feel good about it (wind, bad spot, ect) I just don't open the container and mess with the flag. I have on 2 jumps taken it off in the plane when plans changed and we scraped the low h&p pass. I do not feel good with a full freefall with the bag on my leg. I will look into some of the other systems sugested and talk to my dzo about the rules on the here. Thanks all fot he info.
