skydiverjerry 0 #1 January 22, 2005 hi everybody had a good off airport landing today, as soon as i exited i new it was gonna be poo the uppers were honking along and the winds had shifted seconds before, that sucked, i looked down and we were shifting looked at my camera guy gave him the looser sign and dumped at 6500 to build in some opptions. then started searching for some were i could land, priority 1 chute is ok can i make it back. NO in fact hell NO SO DONT TRY. next were are the obsticles ahh power lines roads and fences, O and that fucking huge FUEL FARM. SO I WHENT THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. at 5000feet looking behind me (holding in the wind) i selected this nice slightly green field, 8 miles from the dz with nothing around it to worry me. and shot for it, chatting to my passenger i said thats were we are going to land, he said why not the dz or next to my camera guy who was allready on the ground. me i like to land safe not close to hazards just to save a walk, landed cut away the main then left it spread out for the plane to swoop over and dpot. then sat and waited for a lift back 10 mins later nice aircon ride turns up worked like a charm life is a journey not to arrive at the grave in a pristine condition but to skid in sideways kicking and screaming, shouting "fuck me what a ride!. AggieDave 6 #2 January 22, 2005 You've got the experience and time in sport to not need me saying "good job" but I wanted to say it anyways. I've yet to land a tandem off in my 500+ tandems, but I know the day will come...it does suck that it seems like your student was being such a punk. If only he knew what sort of danger, death and distruction can arise from "getback-itis."--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I hardly think he was a punk. He didn't know better. If he bitched after getting an explanation, that that was definitely punkish, but just asking why he wasn't landing where he had thought they would is just curiosity. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

skydiverjerry 0 #7 January 23, 2005 i could have but it was windy so i chopped it, then delt with the customer, picked up the double loop (racer) and spread the canopy out. i like talking to my videot esp if the spot sucks i point down then give hime the looser sign, some times when the goof i give them another sign, and on other ocasions i get the customer to blow a kiss or give the bird ( gota be carfull here though as you dont want to upset mum) it would have been nice to land next to him but na the big field looked real nice to me and sooo inviting. i guess the point i wanted to make for the younger skydivers here is that the desicion altitude is when you open thats the time to choose your landing area, and if you do land of so what as long as you land safe! i took some crap in the bar that night (our new bar) but thats to be expected (if i didnot get crap i would worry) on the other hand some of the low time jumpers at our dz also thought it through and realised that maybe they dont have to try to land in the nice area so hard, life is a journey not to arrive at the grave in a pristine condition but to skid in sideways kicking and screaming, shouting "fuck me what a ride!.
