When did RW become FS?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed for a while, in a few ads and in other places that what used to be RW is now FS (Formation Skydiving). I always though FS was short for Free Style.
:S
When did this happen and who did it?

Is it because of VRW? If that was the case then shouldn't RW been changed to HRW instead of FS?

Can't formations be built in all or at least most disciplines?:S

True but RW stands/stood for "Relative Work" and it could equally be said that many disciplines including freeflying and CRW, not just traditional RW, involve movement "relative" to other skydivers.

4+ years ago and the FAI. At the same time CRW became CF.

Did they happen to say why they changed it? Is it suppose to be more politically correct?:D

Is Freestyle still Freestyle or did they just eliminate that altogether?

So people would stop asking WTF RW is? ;):D

IIRC, it was done with an eye toward skydiving being in the Olympics. The term "formation skydiving" is more descriptive and easier for whuffos to understand than is the term "relative work."

No. Although VRW should really be VFS to fit in with the rest...

I heard that the FAI is calling VRW VFS now.

I think it was just changed... I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that was one of things that the Competition Committee brought to the full board and was adopted as a change at the last USPA board meeting per IPC changes.

If you look at the IPC changes that are posted in the RW forum, the references are all to VFS.

Olympics?? I doubt they will ever be there. Too many people are too closeminded about skydiving, I have heard quite a few times "Skydiving? Thats no sport!"...

I think it's more that it's not a spectator sport. It would be like making climbing K2 an olympic event.

I agree. But I think Sky diving and Scuba diving should at least get a chance as exibition Olympic events...;)

I think it has to do with the wuss-ificaiton of things (I could use a different word, but won't)... anyway.... I think it has to do with the wuss-ification of things in our society. I mean, you wouldn't want to offend someone by using the term Relative Work and have them then think that because there was Work involved that it was something that was difficult that one might have to expend some effort on.

Plus, doesn't the IOC classify skydiving as a "motorized sport" making it ineligible?

Good point... On another tangent, who decided that Equestrian was going to be an Olympic sport? I think it's horseshit... and yes, pun intended. :D

However, I think that possibly down the road when wind tunnels become more and more available and popular, we might see wind tunnel flying become an olympic sport because there wouldn't be any variables like you might encounter on a real skydive. Let them use one big enough for an 8 way. You could get a lot of work done in a day with one minute working time rounds.

Don't forget we had an open air wind tunnel exhibition of sorts at a recent Olympic Opening Ceremony or was it the closing ceremony? I think it was the Sydney Oympics...

Or maybe people without relatives were offended. :S:D:D:D

It's no more a motorized sport than bobsledding or skiing. Unless you make the team carry the sled or the skiers hike to the top of the run each time.

We've switched over to calling it VFS. The rule sheets, dive pools, and whatnot have always referred to it as "VRW/VFS" to the best of my knowledge. We also jokingly refer to FS as "HFS."

...but then why isn't CRW now CFS? What happened to the "S"? Did they forget they're skydiving cause they're not in freefall very long? :P

You're thinking of the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter olympics in Turin, Italy.

I don't know where a link to the video is though.:$
