popsjumper 2 #30 April 22, 2008 Quote ...*Ahem* - they'll drink whatever I buy and like it. That's the funny part. Skydivers will bitch, piss and moan about it, but they'll drink every bit of whatever you bring. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Baksteen 84 #31 April 22, 2008 Naturally. Bitching pissing and moaning is what makes us skydivers. But if you're lucky, there might be the occasional jumping out of an aircraft stuff too."That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
Jumpah 0 #32 April 22, 2008 When in doubt, bring some beer, even if you don't "owe" any. Beer outside the hanger when the day is done is rarely a bad thing. At the good DZs its how we all celebrate your success and get to know you. IMHO, buy a case after your first student jump and after you are cleared for solos (usually around jump 7 or 8), then the "beer rules" apply. It'll go a long way towards helping you meet new people, and after some time in the sport you'll have less cases to buy and you'll be able to drink off other people's success. MomDaBomb 0 #33 April 23, 2008 I don't know why but I just feel so uncomfortable giving beer to show my appreciation. It's silly, I know. Maybe that will change as I get to know them more. I'd prefer to give them cash but all I read is beer, beer, and more beer. Is it really that bad to give cash instead?

You're giving everyone beer, including yourself. When someone else achieves a milestone or does something stupid, they'll give everyone beer, including you, even though you probably had absolutely nothing to do with the reason for the beer. You need to read up on the beer rules. It's got nothing to do with saying thanks to your instructors or whoever, although I'm sure that your appreciation will be well received. It's about the camaraderie. It's about meeting other people on the dropzone, making friends, sharing in your success and sharing in theirs. It's got nothing to do with tipping, payment, remuneration, or anything of that ilk. Seriously, do a search for "beer rules".
NWFlyer 2 #35 April 23, 2008 What he said - but if you are truly uncomfortable with beer/alcohol for any reason, don't let anyone pressure you into bringing it against your will. It can be anything else that will bring people together ... a cooler full of sports drinks or bottled water is always appreciated during the day. I bought several boxes of popsicles on a whim on my first visit to Skydive Atlanta - it was 95 degrees and 95% humidity that day. I met a lot of people wandering around handing them out and people enjoyed a different kind of "cold frosty one" in the afternoon. But is traditional. Well cash is King, but I think it is kind of tacky to give your friends and family cash. Bake them some brownies, or bring soda, or bring something for the grill. It is about sharing, they share your gift, you share their experince. Can't really do that with cash."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
