DesertDevil 1 #1 May 12, 2008 I haven't seen a lot of discussions on demos. What kind of demos do people do? Does anybody do demos other than skydive demos? How big are the flags or logos that you've flown or towed behind you? How big was the landing area? Does anybody have any pro rating questions? What size of canopy did you jump with what size of flag? What problems have you had? What does the wing loading need to be? What's the best way to get more demos or advertise yourself? The reason I'm putting this thread here is so that we can share experience and knowledge with each other. It would be cool if you had some pictures or videos. If this thread is in the wrong place, please move it to the right place. Thanks, Faris
airtwardo 7 #2 May 15, 2008 I've done a demo or two......and actually there has been a lotta discussion already in many of the areas you've listed, use the search function...after that if you have any specific questions there are quite a few PRO Rated guys that would jump right in with an answer! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

AndyMan 7 #6 May 16, 2008 I've been doing quite a few demos lately. Last weekend I jumped into an event with 10,000 boy scouts. That landing area was half the size of a soccer field, but it was tricky because it was surrounded by large trees. It was easy for me, but the guy with the 800 foot (20 X 40) flag had a more chalenging approach. I've done landings areas that are a lot smaller and tighter. I've landed on downtown city streets with crossing power lines as well as fairly typical back yards. Those are the ones where I'm thankful that I earned the rating the honest way. The most interesting jump was a night demo into a baseball game, and we built a 4-stack. Did I mention this was at night? Night CRW is an interesting beast, especially when you've over a large crowd. I've done some of these demos with large Triathlons, and I've done others with a small Samurai that I'll swoop. Which canopy I fly depends on who I'm jumping with, and what the conditions allow. My wing loading ranges from 1.1 up to 2.0. www.windycityskydivingteam.com The website is nice, but by far our best advertising is the trust that we've earned from our clients. We're happy to have a few gigs that keep bringing us back time after time. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
airtwardo 7 #7 May 16, 2008 Use white jumpsuits, there more visible. Smoke is best used on jump run so people can find the airplane before you jump. Quote Just to be clear, you & I know you mean burning smoke on the aircraft during jump-run, a n00b might not, & it gets the interior of the AC icky if pulled early...and white jumpsuits are more visible...unless your burning free-fall smoke which makes 'em kinda pink.I burn a lotta smoke on demos, & I use a navy blue jumpsuit with removable Kevlar leggings...you can land with a relatively clean jumpsuit and are protected from blow-outs. That smoke residue gets on everything and is a pain to wash off a canopy, impossible off a jumpsuit if it's white. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
SPAWNmaster 0 #8 May 16, 2008 wow those pics are awesome! I cannot wait to get my PRO rating! any recommendations on a good place to start other than with lots of accuracy coaching and getting the jump numbers in?

Jim Wallace runs a school for would-be demo folks down in Perris As well as Mark Schlatter's demo school up in the Dallas area IIRC. There's also a decent read called 'Demo Details' written by a friend with lots of demo experience...military and civilian. Paragear use to carry it. Accuracy coaching, jump numbers, get properly trained and stay current with the demo skills...us 'ole guys' did all the heavy lifting as far as civilian demo mistakes, back in the 70's & 80's...get trained so ya don't have to learn the lessons we did. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

SPAWNmaster 0 #13 May 16, 2008 thanks for the advice. unfortunately i live in upstate new york so won't be around any of those areas anytime soon. but im in no hurry. any names at the Ranch I could talk to?
PhreeZone 20 #14 May 16, 2008 Upstate NY used to have Mr. Cummins out of NYC that did some high profile demos. I'm not sure if he's still around but he was still 5-6 years ago. In the Midwest Team Fastrax offers demo training for as much stuff as you are wanting to do including smoke, flags, pyro and beyond.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
SPAWNmaster 0 #15 May 16, 2008 sweet. I will be trying to get in on Fastrax's canopy control camp at Skyfest in a few weeks so will take advantage of their knowledge and training on demos. thanks.
PhreeZone 20 #16 May 16, 2008 The canopy control class is different then their demo training. The canopy class is still really good though.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
SPAWNmaster 0 #17 May 16, 2008 I understand that but I mean I can still tap their knowledge/experience for demo related questions when I talk to them
