rear riser landings

Recommended Posts

This is something I bring up quit often to 100 + jumpers, and some with lower #'s. You should be able to land with rears. Scenario- I land on rears often due to swooping but when I had to because of a break fire that wrapped through the lines, there was not much thought about how to fly the canopy.
My whole point being, (practice) and if it's never needed then good for you, but if it is then we will watch you walk away.

I will tell you what I was told with 40 or so jumps still on a student rig by the great Melanie Curtis

DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

not on a student rig for sure.....its very easy to screw up a landing using rear risers..

I could get more detailed but I need to goto bed soon....doing my first balloon jump at 6am

talk to your instructors.....

dont do it...

edit: personally ANY jumper that brags about alot of stand up landings is an egomaniac....a stand up landing in NO WAY equals a perfect landing....

Steve

in no way was i trying to brag about stand up landings. stand ups are nice but i could care less how i land as long as it is the safest i could land. i was just trying to say that landings seem to be fairly easy for me. so being new to the sport and not knowing that rear riser landings could be so dangerous. i was wondering if i should practice rear riser landings but after hearing everyones great input i realize that i need to do alot of practice and really learn my canopy before trying to land one. everyone keeps saying talk to your instructor(which i do when im at the dz but is kinda hard when im sitting at home)

I once was forced into making a rear riser landing because of a tention knot at my right steering toggle. I landed it safely with a standup landing having never done a rear riser landing before. That was at around 35 jumps. Also I almost always do standup landings wind or no wind...so I guess that also makes me an egomaniac.

As others mentioned you don't have anything filled out in your profile but cosidering you introduced yourself as a new skydiver less then 2 months ago I'll make a wild guess and say you probably aren't an experienced skydiver. So I would be carefull about handing out "advice".

Bullcrap.

Standing up most of your landings shows that you control your canopy consistently.

Standing up after flying a solid pattern, while being aware of other canopy traffic and being accurate without causing any traffic hazards due to your canopy flight shows control of your canopy.

I've yet to attempt landing on rears since I do not master my canopy enough yet, but even so I can say that landing with one toggle and one riser is a bad idea.

It is? Have you tried it?

Try it up high sometime. You might be surprised.

Agreed - however, the other poster was referring only to stand up landings.
