Groundbound

Times

Me again. Sorry. Well my self-desciption should steer those hating such posts well clear.

I want to get a rough idea of how much time from plane to ground....
This would help me:
TFF, I am 190#. Assume we are at 2000'msl and climb to 12000' if needed.

average descent rate, free fall for the first minute? My wild guess 5000fpm, I know there is an acceleration - when is terminal velocity reached?

average descent rate under canopy?

Thanks for indulging a nooobie!

Time from exit to feet on ground depends on how high you open. If you open right away you are open for a lot longer.

In general a student will be opening between 4000-5000 feet depending on how far they are in the program. Fall rate is about 120 mph (178 feet per second or 10680 fpm is rough numbers too). You reach terminal at about 9-10 seconds post exit. You will have fallen about 1000 feet to reach terminal speeds.

Most student jumps (from 13k agl) are freefall for about 45-50 seconds and then about a 4-5 minute canopy flight.

Air density really is'nt going to change the figures more then a second or two for most jump centers in the US.

Average decnet speed under canopy depends on the canopy and the jumper flying it.

A good estimate is 10 seconds for the first 1000ft and then 5 sec/1000 ft afterwards. So if you jump at 10000' AGL and pull at 5000' you will be in freefall for 30 seconds.

On your first ever tandem as a passenger?

Just let him count to thirty, lose count underway and then start all over again - enjoy the ride! :P
