used AAD's

Recommended Posts

Hey team

I just invested in my first rig, it comes complete with out an AAD!

so, I'm not trying to be cheap, but I figure a used AAD is a good way to go, since a new Cypres runs 1400-1800 dollars. If I could find a cypres with 4-6 years left I could save some money and invest that into learning more about the sport.

Is this a poor way of looking at it? Who knows where I will be in 10 years, and thats my reasoning behind not needing a brand new out of the box cypres. if I'm still living near my dz in 5 years when the used one runs out, I'll buy a new one then!

I've been keeping an eye on the classifieds, but there doesn't seem to be that much, and if one shows up, its sold in an hour, or the seller doesn't reply.

Does anyone have any links to other boards/DZ websites/ skydive websites that sell used AAD's

Thanks again,
C

Excellent way of thinking. I've been in almost 6 years, and have used two separate rigs. Each one has had a used cypres in it. There's nothing wrong with that at all provided they have had required service completed.

From everything I have found, the pricing on used ones is easy to figure out.

11 years left? 11/12 of original price.
3 years left? 1/4 original price.

Never had a problem.

You also want to account for time left on the batteries or inspection cycle. A new Cypres comes with 4/4 of it's inspection and (for the Cypres 1) 2/2 of its batteries. And the $80 trade-in value.

Total cost of ownership should be about $12/month. Some goes to the original owner and some goes to Airtec over time.

You can estimate the value of a used CYPRES with the calculator on SSK's Web site:

http://www.cypres-usa.com/usedcypres.asp

For "CYPRES Cost" enter the current cost of a new CYPRES, which was $1425 a few weeks ago. The calculator doesn't account for shipping costs, either from the seller or to/from SSK if maintenance is needed, but you can fudge that by adding 30 to the maintenance cost. The calculator isn't perfect, but it's a lot more accurate than assuming a straight-line depreciation.

As for finding a used CYPRES, yes, you'll have to check the Classifieds frequently and act quickly, and even then it may take a few weeks, but it'll be time well spent if you ever need the thing. Good luck!

Original Cypresses only ran under $900 brand-new when you shopped around. Unlike the Cypres-2 they require new batteries at $85/pop every two years or 500 jumps and aren't water proof (a $200 retrofit) which would bring the price to $1525.

A better plan is probably to consider what a new Cypres will actually cost (bearing in mind that some DZOs will sell you one at cost, since they think everyone should have an AAD), add what it will cost to maintain over its life time, subtract the $80 trade-in value, and multiply that quantitiy by the fraction of life left.

Add the $80 trade-in, subtract what you'll send to Airtec over its remaining life, and you have an estimate that may be high (you disregard the time value of money on the battery replacements and maintenance that will happen in the future) or low (a lot of people will pony up more cash than they should now so they don't have to come up with a lot more than they'd like to even though the total cost will be lower).

When the dollar was only trading at $.60 on the Euro, Cypresses cost about $12/month to own under this variation whether you got a brand new Cypres 2 or 9 year old Cypres 1.

Cypresses close enough to their 8 year would be worthless under the formula to a new jumper wanting to have an AAD now.
