Why do some people choose not to go the next step with their license?

Recommended Posts

Advantages for UK jumpers:

B: Full face helmets. Some places also require you to have it before they'll stop making you land in the student area. The downside for some is, now you are eligible to JM and may have to :P

C: Camera. Formally being allowed to swoop (or at least apply for CP1). No real downside.

D: At least one DZ gives free club membership.

There are other things that go along with those first two licenses, but those are the general advantages to the average skydiver who doesn't want to (say) instruct anyone.

As to why people don't get them, i have no idea. People here seem pretty keen to accumulate licenses and stickers, but I guess the lack of them is more of a handicap than the other side of the the Pond.

I never got my A or B, because my DZ was non-USPA and I didn't see the need. Went and got my C and then my D to jumpmaster and instruct.

Reason to get the D? A friend of my once made free jumps all day long at a local airshow, simply because he had the required D license. Guys with a lot more jumps than he sat on the ground with their C or lower license.:S:D

Also some DZ's I've jumped require a D license to land close in with the grownups, instead of a far off student field.

I got my "J" & "I" with only a "C"...had to of course have the "D" for a "T~I" and "PRO" rating ...

I remember being able to give the license tests up to "C" because of holding an "I"... my how things have change in the last couple hundred years huh?! ;)

Yep, I was instructing with only a C license, but I jumped every weekend with a USPA National Director who intimated an Experts license was required to instruct, so I got it to keep him quiet.:S

Yeah night jumps do kick ass...... Still got my A though, never needed more than that yet. As someone earlier said most places will let you slide as long as you have the experience, Ive never been told no. :)

I know a couple guys who stopped at their "C" for the simple reason that they refuse to do the night jumps.

The list of things you can't do without a "D" is pretty short unless you're wanting to do demos, so it doesn't really matter.

The only reason i don't have a D is because i don't plan on ever jumping out of an aircraft at night....EVER.

I don't ever plan on doing it again. There are more reasons to get your D than jumping at night. I didn't want to do it, think its a stupid requirement, everyone told me I could get a waiver and not do it, I didn't want no stinkin' waiver so this summer I did two. The freefall is cool, kind of scary not being able to see the other canopies until they get right to you. My night vision is not what it used to be so even with lights the landing was - I busted my ass both times.
