USPA Membership

Recommended Posts

Let mine go away but now that Im getting current again I need it again, it says that I have to pay extra to have it rushed in the system but Im wondering if I go through the dropzone to sign up again will I be able to jump or will I have to wait until they finish processing it? Theres no way Im paying extra for them to type in my name and click "renew" faster ...

Many dropzones (you'll want to check with the specific one you're visiting) will accept your confirmation that you applied for membership. So if you go through the online process, I think there's a confirmation at the final step that you've submitted all your info and paid the fee.

Depends on the dropzone. Some dropzones will make you pay for the temporary 30 day USPA membership even if they fax your renewal back themselves.

My DZ will let you fill it out at the DZ and fax it in there. Once it is faxed they accept it as good! I did my B and C test the same day as my night jumps and they were fine with that. Call the DZ and ask.

Don't worry about the USPA, you don't need it. Joining or being a member of a "Club" does not make you a better skydiver. The only thing it does is enables you to jump at DZ's that are gung ho USPA group members. (that mentality only limits their business) Our staff and jumpers are USPA members, but we don't require it. If someone shows up wanting to jump, and they have current entries in their logbook, and their reserve is current, we just check them out and pair them up with a qualified staff member for their first jump. It's that simple.
And furthermore, the USPA cannot show up at a non USPA DZ and say someone cannot do this or that.
I don't know if they can do that at a USPA member DZ.
They are NOT a Government Affiliated Agency and they have no governing powers if you're not a member.
I will add that by me saying this, that does not mean that I am anti USPA, I think they are great organization with the exception that they, like hundreds of customers, got screwed by sLyride, I just believe that a lot of people have way over-estimated their power and what little authority they do have.
I have done Demos into everything from Birthday parties and Wedding receptions to Football games and drag and stock car racetracks, and the FAA has yet to ask me for my USPA membership info. I have done those both without being a member, as an expired member and as a current member. The FAA didn't care.

I'm sure I'm going to catch some friction from saying this, but until someone of governing authority tells me different, you are not required by any Federal, State or Local laws to be a member.

My statement here may or may not apply to any level of Instructional ratings, ie; Tandem, AFF, SL etc.

In this case being a USPA member is needed. These dropzones are USPA group members and would require you to be a USPA member. I have never been to a USPA group member dropzone that did not make this requirement. It's mostly for the insurance that is included in the USPA membership.

People who work at non uspa dropzones do have follow the BSR's of USPA if they want to keep their ratings!! A fun jumper is different. The instructors are still required.

As far as Demo's waivers are done by FAA and why would they ask for a membership as long as you are qualified.

That's why I put that foot note in there. Like I said, there's no law that you have to be a member of some club to jump out of an airplane. And I am pretty sure that if a person were to be employed at a non-USPA DZ, go through the training and show the proficiency just as he/she would if they were getting a USPA Instructor's ticket (with the exception of Tandem) That person can operate with no problem. And for the Tandem rating, I may be mistaken, but 4 different DZO's that have told me on more than one occasion that as long as you have the manufacturer's rating, you don't have to be a USPA member.
I'm not Tandem rated, so I'm not going to try to dive too far into the requirements on that rating.

I don’t know your experiences with them, but the USPA seems quite helpful and professional particularly in comparison to the BPA (I’m a member of both). Personally, I don’t begrudge them USD 58.00/yr when I have to pay GBP 140.65 for my BPA membership. These come due in April of each year and this past year we saw an exchange rate of 1.99 making the 2008 BPA membership 279.89 US Dollars equivalent. 58 Bucks doesn’t sound so bad now.

To add some salt in the wound (re BPA), let’s say you already pay a substantial sum for a third party insurance that has global coverage for skydiving and liability cover of GBP 2 million. Think the BPA would allow you to opt out of the insurance portion as you are already covered? No chance.

Hi Lisa Marie,

From the profile pix, you're still lookin' good. Haven't seen you since Dublin, '05 maybe. Where are you these days?

Yuppers its been since Dublin 05, I moved out here a fews years ago (Texas) I visit Florida and GA but for family not jumping. And thanks on the pic comment, makeup does wonders lol

Scrummy - STILL hate your email, it never works...yes me current, two more days and counting. Then once your out here for another big way we can jump together...

About my question and about joining a club. Personally I have some issues with the USPA and such but I have always jumped at DZs that require membership and Id rather pay that money to be a member then search and dig for the few that do not require it. I pay for membership, I will not pay to receive a hard copy of my A license, I will remain A qualified and hope I never lose my card because I right now and in the past have not justified spending money for them to send me back a pretty A Card when my signed off gold one is just as valid. Ohhh yea I will get flames for that but oh well Ive heard worse. Either way I dont mind paying to be a part of the USPA, I do mind paying extra to expedite.

I still really wish those of us who do not need the magazine saved a few bucks but Ill leave that battle to whoever else wants to take it on.

I'm a member, and I don't have any problem with the USPA, I just kinda take issue with the mentality that USPA is that almighty ruling authority of skydiving.
I just thought it was kinda chicken poop to settle with sLyride. I think they should have stood their ground.
