"the flip flop jumper"

Recommended Posts

unfortunately I do not have my parachutist on hand at this moment but the other day while sitting on the throne i was purusing the march issue (which i have gone over three times cover to cover and couldnt even count the amount of times i have seen the pictures!!) and i came across the tropical pictorial section

it is a two page spread and on the left side there is a 10? 12? 16? way hybrid and if you pay attention to the feet of the gentlemen on the left wearing white and black he is wearing flip flops

when i saw this i let out a wild laugh and then thought how is that possible....

so i ask all of you out there --- have you ever made a flip flop jump...if so was it successful? or have you known someone to make a jump with flip flops .... all i can think of is freeflying with this guy ... coming in to dock from above and then off comes a sandal and smacks me square in the nose ...

*** be a great thing to catch on video!!!

blue skies!!!

Yes I have. You'd better have a pretty nice landing area, and good landing skills though.

I've either put my flip flops in my jumpsuit until the canopy was open, or I've taken a rubber band, larks headed it to the flip flop strap and then put it over my big toe.

I pretty much stopped doing it and barefoot jumps for the most part when I started jumping high performance canopies. Foot injuries are a bitch to get healed.

I probably have a couple hundred flipflop jumps, but under different type canopies than are jumped today, so landings never, ever had to be run out. I didn't like the larks-head to the flipflop technique (that lump between the toes, ya know), so I just put a rubber band around my big toe and second toe, trapping the shoe. Worked fine.

My jump shoes of choice are Alps sandals (sadly discontinued but I have a new, spare pair in the closet0. The had straps around the ankles so no danger of falling off but I have more jumps in them than anything else. Also some flip flop jumps but preferred not having anything between my toes. Lots of guys used to just clench their toes when needed.

Almost everyone was wearing Tevas, or some type of sandals, in the early 90s.

Bill Von too.

Only I remember he wore socks with his . . . :P

NickD :)

I think livendive still does... (wear socks with Tevas that is...) I don't know whether he still wears them while skydiving...

I have worn Tevas and I have even jumped barefoot... but those jumps were on days when I knew I was 99% sure I would land in the beautiful grass landing area and could stop my canopy (because of good winds) I don't however generally like to do it on the off chance that I will be forced to land off field... in somewhere other then the beautiful sod farm we have to land in... :)

i have seen the teva jumpers and in my book thats not so bad considering they are attached....its the flip flop that gets me ... to me that would be like a girl running straight into a wave with only a bikini on --- hey its great for the surfers out past the break but not so much for her idea of covering up!!!B|

I have always wanted to do the barefoot jump but i still have not found a DZ with a shag carpet landing area;)

Hi blueskies,
Yup, stow band on the center toe strap and wrap the band around yer big toe before exit. Great in the summer when the weather is warm!! Beware of rocks, gravel, dirt clods and cacktus!! Great on golf course turf type DZ's!!

I used to jump with the open sandal, landed in long grass once and managed to get grass cuts between my toes!! Drove me mad waiting for them to heal,B|

Always jump in trainers now and booties on top ;)

Haha, you're more than welcome to come to my DZ. Our landing area is a Sod farm...oh yeah, nice plush green gold for 250 acres...just don't try the barefoot/flip flop during the harvest season...nothing but ground up dead plants...lots of sticks. haha. In the summer time I am an Avid flipflop and barefoot jumper b/c my DZ has the best field for it.

Tevas were on the list of must have 'skydiving/boogie gear' for me in those days. Right after goggles.

Still have a pair but only use them for reef fishing.

aloha.

I remember a guy that use to use a paking rubber band around each big toe to keep his on while tracking.

I also thought it was funny as hell a couple years ago when we were doing the 100 way demo into Kitty Hawk 100 years to the day of the 'First Flight'...

Roger Ponce, who always jumps barefoot regardless of the weather had on a pair to Tevas as we went through security at the site prior to jumping...understandable because of the amount of walking we had to do as well as the frost on the ground.

I couldn't help but bust out laughing when the security guard noticed Roger's footwear and exclaimed..."I hope you don't plan on jumping with those on!" :o

Roger simply said~With sandals?....of course not....B|

Hi T

Feet are easier to keep clean :) flip flops could be throw away.

OTOH we saw a guy with the initials RP give a seminar at a party in paradise boogie with one foot in a ice bucket;)
