futuredivot 0 #1 April 3, 2009 What is the downside/dangers of jumping in one of these http://www.futuro-usa.com/product_list.aspx?type=1&p=512&c=2097152&u=68719476736You are only as strong as the prey you devour
LongWayToFall 0 #2 April 3, 2009 I think you will loose some style points. Honestly, if your neck is busted to the point of needing one, you probably shouldn't be jumping. You need to keep your head moving and looking around especially after the break off and under canopy. And what if you had a really hard opening, and hurt your neck more? I suppose if you are willing to risk it, go ahead, but maybe hop and pops are the best way not to risk others, not to mention the soft openings. CSpenceFLY 1 #3 April 3, 2009 I think something like that might increase the chances of a broken neck if you had a real hard opening. Basically I think a hard opening would snap your neck at the base of your skull
firstime 0 #4 April 4, 2009 I love to skydive but not being in wheel chair or dead might make me rethink my weekend advocations
keithbar 1 #5 April 4, 2009 back in the day when i was jumping a really heavy( by today's standards) 8mm video setup. I used to wear one quite a bit. it's foam so i had no problem looking around. i did take it off under canopyi have on occasion been accused of pulling low . My response. Naw I wasn't low I'm just such a big guy I look closer than I really am .
Tuna-Salad 0 #6 April 5, 2009 There is a video guy at zhills who uses one to film his opening because he doesn't want his head moving around with heavy camera equipment on it.Millions of my potential children died on your daughters' face last night. funfall 0 #7 April 5, 2009 That type of collar is meant to limit mobility, but won't provide much protection in a hard opening or similar event. Most are much softer/flimsier than their advertised descriptions - so fairly comfortable (for wearing all day), but not very effective for anything but reminding the wearer to limit movement. There are other devices more appropriate for protection from hard openings, that won't restrict normal movement as much. (Some are made for motocross racers, football players, etc.)
futuredivot 0 #8 April 5, 2009 Can you point me toward one of these other devices? Thanks. You are only as strong as the prey you devour

I have been thinking of getting some sort of brace to help me with these openings. When I wear a camera, I am always afraid it will be a rough one, luckily I haven't had a hard opening while wearing one... I don't know why, but my canopy hated me this weekend. funfall 0 #11 April 7, 2009 That one looks effective! There was a recent discussion of others at http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3494989;search_string=hans;#3494989

steve1 5 #13 April 8, 2009 Dan Brodsky wore one of those for a while, after he broke his neck in plane crash. The Doctors told him he should never jump again. He said his neck hurts every day, but he still jumps. I had a hard openning canopy for a while. I learned a better way to pack it, and the opennings usually aren't too awful. I think my neck is still messed up because of that. My chiropractor says the vertebra are wearing out. Maybe that is part of being an old fart. Maybe I should quit jumping. I'm not ready to give it up yet....

Ditto-I could opt for the operation but I'm not willing to take that step yet. I'm willing to accept a certain amount of pain but not as much as I was in the last time I jumped. Really, I just want to go out more on my terms. You are only as strong as the prey you devour
