skyjumpenfool 2 #26 June 9, 2009 I guess I need to apologize to everyone?? I thought the OP was looking to see what everyone’s opinion was on this subject. And then, interpret those opinions to help settle a dispute. I didn’t realize he was looking to find out who is “right” and who is “wrong”?????? Anyway, I’m sorry I voiced my ideas earlier in this thread, not knowing I had to be “right” and that any “outside the box” brainstorming was unacceptable. So, once again, please disregard my earlier ideas and realize I misunderstood the OP’s original question. (now smiling) Or, just lighten the hell up, and allow people to throw out ideas in an attempt to stimulate discussion without bringing on personal attacks. Everyone should note that I never mentioned Capt.Stan in this thread, as the source of the disagreement. I wasn't going to drag his name into it, if he didn't want to be here. I simply framed the disagreement, presenting both sides, and asked what others thought. I even pointed Capt.Stan to this thread so that he would be aware of it and could make his own input if he wished. I think I've been fair in my presentation, genuinely seeking out the general consensus on the issue. I'm not criticizing Capt.Stan. He has firm opinions, but there's nothing wrong with that, and he does a good job of justifying them. He has also been a gentleman throughout this difference of opinion. I think the discussion does show that the term "square parachute" can mean different things to different people. Therefore, when using it, we should take the time to explicitly state what we mean, so as not to confuse or mislead the audience. I'm not sure how to categorize the two schools of thought. One is the generalized common meaning, and the other a technical engineering meaning. Or something like that...
skypuppy 1 #28 June 9, 2009 QuoteIs there an element of elitism or snobbery in the poll results? Are the elliptical parachute voters just snobs that don't want to be associated with average rectangular parachute flyer's, and want to differentiate themselves to stand out from the crowd? It kind of reminds me of a girl I was talking to; when I asked her if she was in college, she said; "No, I'm in the Master's program." Huh? If you're studying for a Master's degree, then you're in college! I think there was snobbery in that answer too - she wanted to differentiate herself from those lowly BA degree folks. _________________________________________________ I don't know, it could be a cultural thing. Up here we have colleges and universities. If you're in a masters program, you're in university, not college. Generally colleges gave certificates or diplomas, universities bestowed degrees. So you could have been a bit unfair to her....If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. JackC 0 #29 June 9, 2009 If you're talking to wuffos, the term square will mean any ram-air parachute and eliptical will mean nothing or worse still, round. Skydivers will probably know the difference.
