timmyfitz 0 #26 June 29, 2009 Using basketball as an example I think we all would agree that basketball is a sport. Whether you play basketball for fun on the weekends or you play competitively in the NBA and get paid to play, basketball is still a sport. One is a hobby (for fun) and the other is a profession. Skydiving is a sport whether you do it for fun on the weekends or you are part of a competitive 4 way team. The question you should be asking is whether skydiving is a hobby or a profession. Some skydivers might also describe it as an art form--the most beautiful jumps (this being completely subjective of course) are the best. That's a little different from basketball where a basket still scores 2 (or 3) points whether it's a thing of beauty or not. Skydiving is definitely an addiction whatever else it might be ."It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014
rehmwa 2 #28 June 29, 2009 90% of the participants? Hobby or social activity the other 10%? sport much of the time, hobby the rest of the time ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
heavydude 0 #29 June 30, 2009 I would say its more similar to sports like Scuba Diving, Skateboarding, maybe Surfing. It can be an activity itself or a mode of military transportation. I kind of view it as another facet of aviation, planes, gliders, parachutes, paragliders, another method of Aerial fun. Like the above sports there are lots of recreational participants and a significantly lower number who are professionals and are high level competitive jumpers. So it can be both in my opinion.
