I start my static in a week...

Recommended Posts

HAHA. Yeah I have read that all over and I hope that I won't totally fuck up the free fall when I get to that point. My main thing right now is landing. Is it anything like landing a plane? When you flare is that kind of like the point you nose up in a plane to reduce speed and touch?

And yes I'm sure my instructor will teach me when to flare but as a guy that grew up around planes and has flown I'm just wondering if it's kind of like that.

Being a pilot will help you in skydiving, but not so much at first. For your first few jumps, forget that you know anything about airplanes, and just take the class for what it's worth.

If you've been trained in engine out procedures, you'll understand the concept of canopy flight. You're always moving forward, always losing altitude, and there's no way to stop it. Although, the big difference will be the glide angle, with the canopy being very steep in comparison to an airplane.

In terms of flaring, the steeper glide angle will alter the look of the approach, so it will feel different than in an airplane. This is where you need to forget about airplanes, and just go with the training your instructor provides.

I had my class over a week ago but the weather was shit. so Saturday I went up and got to jump twice. Went great and felt great! First landing was on my ass second one was a perfect standing and with almost no radio instruction, he just kept telling me to check my altimeter and do what I was taught.

Landing is a lot stepper then I thought it would be, but I didn't have to much of a problem with canopy control. It was amazing sitting in the harness 2500 feet up! Going back up the next Saturday or Sunday that the weather is good! Hoping to get my 3 practice ripcords done in one day and get signed off of static.

I am on AFF Category F 3500 clear and pull and I still haven't got used to the glide slope of a parachute. I still am setting up my downwind and base like I am flying a cessna 182. I need to forget almost everything I learned about pattern altitude.
For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

It is kind of the same idea as setting up in a 182, just a lot smaller since your forward momentum is a lot less and you are in a much steeper glide then you would be in a plane. I'm hoping that with in the next few jumps I will be able to get off radio instruction all together. Good luck with your aff! I still have at least 3 more static jumps to go, then I will do my 3500 clear and pull, then start going up in my delays before pull. I have awhile before I'm at 10,000ft. Hoping to get there before the start of winter and hoping to get my A early next summer, depending on much winter will keep me grounded.

Also I don't know how they do it at your drop zone but mine is small enough that when a student who is still on the static line exits the plane no other canopy's are in the air. So for your first 5 jumps you don't have to worry about another canopy near you, just finding the wind direction and getting in a good landing pattern. Then they start bringing you into landing with other canopy's around by having the instructor jump with you.

I'm not a pilot (except of parachutes :)

Opposite effect going from parachute to glider. When I'm on final with a glider, going over houses, trees, and power lines, looking at my alti being 300 feet AGL, make me mighty nervous. I think I want nice flat grass under me, no obstacles whatsoever.

Of course, this has to do with the glide angle. The glider is, what 30 to 1? Wow. Now, if I had a birdman suit like that, life would be grand!
