lintern 1 #1 November 9, 2009 Just lately my slider keeps getting caught up on opening and i have to get on the rear risers and shake them to get the slider to come down. Any ideas why this might be happening ? The canopy is an Icarus Safire 2, 145. It has between 500 and 600 jumps on it now. I have lost a bit of weight lately (not been eating properly) so could this be to blame ?

My rigger has looked and said the lines are ok at the moment and dont need replacing just yet. I couldnt afford a new lineset at the moment either. virgin-burner 1 #4 November 9, 2009 ok at the moment? dont need replacing just yet? i dont know about your financial situation and couldnt really care less, but a canopy with that amount of jumps DOES need a new lineset, rather sooner than later; otherwise you'll get funky stuff as what you're describing with it. if your safety is not worth the money you spend on gear.. well; your life must not be worth much then!? 700 jumps on a lineset, and its done!“Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. aresye 0 #5 November 9, 2009 What kind of lines do you currently have? If you have dacron, it's time to replace. If you have spectre, they're overdue to replace. If you have HMA, holy **** batman! Replace them now!Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
skybytch 273 #6 November 9, 2009 Quote My rigger has looked and said the lines are ok at the moment and dont need replacing just yet. A visual inspection or did the trim get checked? They may look okay, but I'd bet they are way out of trim.
lintern 1 #7 November 9, 2009 My rigger is a very good rigger and very highly respected, so he knows what he is talking about. He did an inspection of the main when my reserve was due a repack a few months back. But I dont know exactly how he inspected it. When I told him about the slider problem he did another visual inspection. Could someone please explain to me why exactly the slider gets caught up when the lineset becomes old ? I cant remember what lines mine are - someone did tell me but I forgot. I know he said its the type that stretch. He told me about another type which dont stretch but snap when they reach the end of their life. Dont know if anyone can tell from that what my lines are ? Just out of interest what would happen eventually if the line set was not renewed - would the slider get permantley stuck up ? Looks like im going to need new lines then. Even though I cant afford it, my life is more important. I always look after my gear - my AFF instructor always told us to "look after your gear.... and your gear will look after you"
virgin-burner 1 #8 November 9, 2009 mate seriously, if your lines have more than 5-600 jumps, they need a replacement; nevermind what your rigger says.. now be happy you dont have a competition velocity, i think those lines are only good for like 100 jumps..“Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Bill_K 0 #9 November 9, 2009 Are you using soft links or hard links on your risers? On my old canopy, the slider grommets had dings and bumps and burrs on them. In talking to my rigger about them, he suggested switching to soft links, which I did. My reason for asking is that if your using hard links, and your grommets have some of those combined with an old line set, you could be getting more friction than you normally would and that could be contributing to it hanging up. As others have suggested, you really should look at finding a way to get the lines replaced. Ask around, you can probably get it done for more reasonably than you think. FAR cheaper than a new canopy and it goes without saying cheaper than your life! See if you can trade work with your DZO or do some extra packing or something. Take a few weeks off of jumping and send that budget to fund new lines. Your life is worth that. Take care, BK
gemini 0 #10 November 9, 2009 My Sabre2 starts doing that whenever I need a new line set. What causes it to hang up is some of the lines shrink more than others. When the slider is being packed, some of the canopy fabric will be pulled through the slider grommets. This causes the slider to hesitate a lot longer than it should or to not come down at all until you shake the lines. Blue skies, Jim

That's probably HMA, which shows little sign of wear before failing. >Dont know if anyone can tell from that what my lines are ? Honestly your lines are probably Spectra just because most HP canopies are lined with Spectra. They shrink when they get old and cause the sorts of problems you describe. timmyfitz 0 #13 November 10, 2009 Quote now be happy you dont have a competition velocity, i think those lines are only good for like 100 jumps.. Why would you think they need to be replaced at 100 jumps? You can get a comp Velocity with 300 or 500 HMA.
virgin-burner 1 #14 November 10, 2009 i think they're usually 250 HMA..“Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda
