Market for Expired CYPRES ?

Recommended Posts

I've seen ads in the DZ.com Classifieds offering to buy expired CYPRES units and even one for sale for US$120. Is there really a market for these outside the U. S.? I guess that may be the test program to see how long they are really workable.

At one time I was buying them for testing. We would use them to delay deployment of test items. They worked as well as Robinson finger cutters and in some cases were cheaper. We bought them for $20 over trade in value.

I've got an "expired" one that I've been thinking of "flight testing" to see if the "rumor" that the Cypres cutter is really strong enough to cut 3/32 stainless a/c control cable.

Anyway, haven't gotten around to it yet, but what is your prediction of the results?

When the Cypres originally was introduced back in 1991 it had a 2 year maintenance interval and then it was eventually extended to the 4 years it is today after reviewing the data from the units in the field. The 12 year time was established and it is documented why they have it sat as that in some of their downloadable files on www.cypres.cc

yea, they're being used as paper-weights! ;)

Awww, beat me to the punch line.:P

We've got a pair of those $1200 paperweights sitting around the house.:S
I don't remember being told they'd time out like that when we bought them.:|

mine needs its first year check by april, not sure if i should order a vigil maybe, so i can sell the cypres with the old rig, or just "transplant" it; the way it looks with my old rig, i think i'll just do that.. :S

I remember Cypres had a few teething issues too.:P Besides, I rarely jump from pressurized C-130's. I figure if Vigil is good enough for Andy, Luke and Jeffro on the Red Bull Air Force, it can handle my 90 degree riser swoops.:D

Since the manufacturer has published its expiration lifetime, I'd be interested to know which other countries enforce this expiration time in their parachuting regulations.

I don't think you'd have to leave the ground to do that. Just rig the cutter with the cable and send the right voltage to it. I agree that putting it (the cable) under tension would probably help.

Well I'd figure I'd just rig it up for the event, adjust the test Cypres up by its maximum amount, put it in a fanny-pack or something, take it for a skydive and just pull a bit lo... ;)

OR

I'd look up one of my friends who has a test chamber for altimeters / old mechanical FXCs and run the test in there.

I poked around on the site pretty extensively; including the downloadable file in English. Lots of good reading, but no explanation of why a system that specs out in testing is still considered expired after 12 years.

Is it buried in some link I'm not seeing? Can anybody point me to the company's explanation for the expiration date policy?
