How many demo jumps do you do in one year?

Recommended Posts

Post your average number of demo jumps each year?

Lets here from the ones that do the low to no paying demos, and the ones who make good money or a living off of it.

I only do about 10-20 no paying (for cost) demos a year right now.

Approx. 4-6 college football games and other college sporting events, approx. 6-8 misc. softball/baseball fields for various age groups, and a few other misc. demos a year.

I mostly do larger events that contract for several 'performances'.
(...for some reason professional performers call an event the
demo and the jumps at the demo- -performances)

The most performances I've done in a year is 88, and the least is about 20.

I contract nationwide, very few are what might be considered local...or free.

I only average 2 demojumps/year, because even before the winds died down enough for my first SL jumps I was groundcrewing for some demojumps, and I'm a chicken for some of the stuff that happened then and later: I don't like small obstructed landing fields if I can avoid them, jumping in higher winds than I would have on my DZ, being in the air with people who are too focused on being on a demo jump to look around where they're flying, jumping into football fields where teams are still running around because they refuse to budge, etc.

BTW I've never gotten paid as such, sometimes we get a free jump after, sometimes we actually have to pay a few euros to jump (military demos or you get some drinks in return).

I'll do the occasional nice big open field demo jump (airshows and the like, usually you only need 100 jumps or so for these), I'll happily film tandempassengers or fly wingsuit or do CRW during those, and I'll happily groundcrew for everything else but I'm too chicken for the "real" demos myself :|

I hae done 10-20 per year the past couple of years. Some non-paying for charity or to promote the drop zone. We are trying to promote our team and get some more gigs.

Is that in just the last year? or is your profile out of date?

Matt

Mostly in the past year and a half. Up until almost a year ago I did only "open field" demos.;)

No~;)

I would say that you're conservative and stay within your limitations...and that get nothing but respect from me! B|

+1

I was always told that if your not confident, don't do it, and no one will hold it against you. I haven't backed down yet, but sure would if necessary.

I only did three demo jumps last year.

The first was into Nat Bailey Stadium, in the middle of Vancouver, surrounded by buildings, wires and trees and construction. There not many "outs": a couple of soccer fields and the steep Queen Elizabeth Park bordering the show site.

My second demo was for the Pitt Meadows Airshow. We landed on the edge of our regular DZ, not that challenging as demo jumps go, but it was over a crowd and I did trail a flag under canopy.

My third demo was into Mercer Stadium, with even fewer "outs" and we jumped at "sunset" nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more, say no more.

Usually around 6 or so a year now-a-days. Used to do quite a few more -- one or two years around 25 or so. Nowadays they're mostly freebies for charity or low pay -- favors for friends.

The few that do pay, it's 100 bucks per jumps.

In the 90's money seemed a lot freer -- there were more airshows around.
If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.

Ain't THAT the truth! :S

In the 90's I was getting 3 or 4 times what I am now for a 4man 3day event...6 to 9 performances and a night pyro show.

Dunno if we were overpaid then or underpaid now...probably a little of both. ;)

I do about ten demos that pay well and then a few to help friends out with little pay. So far this year, nothing yet. But the season just started.

I own a dropzone in Kansas, and the DZ does three to five demos a year. Last year we did three on the 4th, I jumped two of them.

For the most part I don't do free demos unless one of the jumpers arranges it and pays for the airplane. We jump at one guys house for Christmas, etc. Kansas being Kansas, we do about 50% of what's scheduled.

Of the calls I get most people just can't justify the $1000 +/- price tag.
Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.
