Full Faced helmets > 100 jumps

Recommended Posts

a BPA instructor is a better person to comment, until they do, my understanding is that the reason full faces are not allowed for people on low jump numbers is that they can restrict peripheral vision.

Also, in my experience, I've only needed full face protection on bigger ways when I'm a latish diver and don't keep the gap between myself and the person in front of me tight enough and get kicked on exit (or should I say jump into someones feet :$). I wouldn't expect people with low jump numbers to be in that exit position.

I started at jump 30... Not to say that is the right time for everyone, but it worked for me, and the USPA does not have any BSRs that I know of about jump numbers and helmets...

I think the right time is when, as a skydiver, you have enough awareness to open the visor (if it fogs up), while maintaining altitude awareness and not only maintaining stability but the awareness to continue with the "dive plan" in freefall or having to open it while maintaining canopy control with toggles in hands on final, etc...

The cutaway handles have always been visible with my helmet, but others might be different, so make sure you can find them even if you can't see them, but you should see them and practice on the ground with the helmet...

I personally will always have a helmet with a visor that flips up... (without the whole front face flipping) Right after I pitch and have rear risered away from anything I might need to, I open my visor before I do anything else. Under canopy, I like the wind in my face as it gives me a sixth sense of speed, and I like to know I will never get a sudden glare/reflection of blindness caused by the visor... And I just like the wind in my face because it is fun. That is me...

All this has been discussed many times before, you may want to search to find more info.

A few years back, a PFF (Canadian program similar to AFF) asked if he could buy a full-face helmet. He tried wearing the helmet onthe ground to confirm that he could see all his handles, etc.
He did his second and all subsequent jumps with that full-face helmet.
NO muss, no fuss!

I purchased my first Oxygene at 25 jumps and never looked back. Still use it. No problems with peripheral vision at all.

My DZ doesn't allow people with less than 100 jumps to wear a full face. The reasons have been discussed previously but some of which are problems with fogging, can you see your reserve and cutaway handles, can you see your RSL if you need to disconnect it?

It would be easier to see in the air, it moves higher. I was referring to on the ground. I know someone who landed in high wind wearing a Z1, they elected to cutaway, but first looked for their RSL. They couldn't see it but still had to chop as it was very windy and their reserve popped.
