I didn’t know that the East wing was originally built in 1942 as cover for a bunker. 

While Trump is a despicable piece of trash, is it possible that this is also cover for a major upgrade? I’d imagine a security bunker that was fit for purpose 80 years ago is completely inadequate these days. You’d be hard pressed to explain major building operations at the Whitehouse for a covert upgrade. It would also be reasonable for national security to not broadcast to everyone what is being done.

Not meaning to sound like a conspiracy theorist, more just musing on a potential explanation that might be more logical than it first seems. Of course with Trump his approach is always self centred and inflammatory, not to mention his appalling taste.

What has Trump ever done that would lead you to think it is worthwhile spending any time searching for a reasonable explanation for his actions?

The fact that Trump promised in July that the ballroom would be an addition and the existing East Wing would not be touched, and now the entire East Wing has been razed to the ground without any warning, planning permission or oversight is entirely consistent with his standard MO of not giving a fuck about anyone or anything.

There's also the tie in with the $230M that Trump has decided the Justice Department owes him (a dispute which he has declared he will be final arbiter of as the CiC of the DoJ) which he has said he 'might' donate to the ballroom project. But hang on - he's already raised the $250M budget from his tech bro oligarchs - so if he uses the $230M settlement where does that go?

Trump playing the world's most obvious game of 3 card monte so that he can get the taxpayer to fund the ballroom while claiming he paid for it personally and walking away with a quarter billion dollar slush fund of pure profit is just a touch more likely than the idea that he gives a solitary shit about national security infrastructure.

Absolutely, he’s a crook and an arsehole. Nothing he does is for the greater good. 

Well to be fair he might be needing a high quality panic room/bunker with the way things are going :) Still fits with the self centred mindset of Trump.
