nigel99 620 #1 Posted June 28 Not sure if others have found this, but we’ve been rediscovering old recipes and it just struck me how cheap some of the old staples are. My son does a great spaghetti bolognaise. We’ve had the news covered extensively by the triple mushroom murderer. She made Beef Wellington with death cap mushrooms. Unfortunately that means every day the news has a great looking picture. End result I made one yesterday. Today used up the excess pastry to make Cornish pasties (I miss the Cornish Pasty shop at Marylebone station). It struck me how cheap they are to make (carrot, turnip, potato and steak). Despite the Aussie claim to have the best pies, as with Vegemite they are kidding themselves. Melton Melbury pork pies, steak and Guinness pies, Cornish pasties are hard to beat. TriGirl 343 #2 July 7 I will agree with the steak & Guinness pie!! And yes, that is something I have to reinforce to my youngest nephew often: cook at home, from scratch, and you will save time and money. And you can clear out all the preservatives, sodium and other junk from your system when you stop eating fast food and pre-packaged meals.

TriGirl 343 #4 July 7 Same! One year, I lived pretty much on egg noodles with steamed broccoli and carrots, topped off with some lemon pepper and maybe parmesan!

Broccoli is a favourite. But it’s $5 a pound here. Not poor student food anymore.
wmw999 2,589 #6 July 8 Mac and cheese was 5 for a dollar back then. Add a can of tuna and some frozen peas, it’s a casserole. Wendy P.

Followed by cinnamon toast for dessert. Mom was the queen of casseroles. I think she invented Hamburger Helper. :)
