nigel99 574 #1 Posted Monday at 11:20 PM I’ve been thinking about the Trump comment on only 2 dolls or 5 pencils. While I’m sure he’s not an environmentalist, I believe excessive consumption is a problem. It used to be that we had a couple of treasured possessions and would save for them. What we did have was often much higher quality than is available now on the shelves of Kmart etc. The cheap junk toys, cookware and other items don’t last and contribute to landfill and pollution. While it will be a shock and change to the expectations of so many in the west, and arguably goes against capitalist ideals fed by consumerism, I think Trump has accidentally become a champion for one aspect of the environmental movement. Maybe it’s naive nostalgia, but it would be nice to see the rise of a few quality toy brands again, and model making.

Unfortunately they are in demand. So most likely we will simply see even cheaper junk toys, cookware etc made in America and sold to Americans - because there won't be much in the way of choice. I fly R/C models, I've been doing it for over 60 years. Quite a lot of work involved in getting, say, an F-14, F-22 or B-1B to fly. It's an old man's hobby, very few young people are interested.

That's because it's easier and less expensive to buy Call of Duty, Wings of War, watch porn and sit around ordering Door Dash. Any wonder why hooters is declaring bankruptcy. Hooters was by no means a good hot wings breastaurant IMO. Twin Peaks had interesting shift changes reminiscent of strip joints, which I also never cared for.

David Wang 69 #11 Thursday at 01:31 AM This reminds me of a lab experiment where we did wind tunnel testing on a F-14 model to study the effect of wing sweep on lift and drag. Very classy aircraft. p.s. planes are boring. Rockets are cooler

A Mk IX I think? 4 hours ago, David Wang said: This reminds me of a lab experiment where we did wind tunnel testing on a F-14 model to study the effect of wing sweep on lift and drag. Very classy aircraft. Reminds me of video of a scale model Eurofighter Typhoon taking off, it immediately pitches into a vertical climb before flicking into a dive and crashing…. Which is ironically exactly how the real plane would behave without the flight control computer making millisecond by millisecond adjustments.

jakee 1,564 #14 Thursday at 12:12 PM (edited) Goddamn dude that’s some collection. Are you running real miniature gas turbines in any of them? You’ve got a Typhoon, B1B, display Typhoon ‘Blackjack’ (there’s a funny story about why 29 SQN’s logo is XXX) alongside a Rafale (though I had to cheat on that one - I wanted to say a Gripen because the colour looked Swedish). Then you’re onto a Phantom II, F16 (I don’t know the different versions / blocks) and rounding out with the truly terrifying F104 Starfighter. There’s a cockpit video from an Italian who flies an F104 and they’re using over 90% dry power on final because of the insane induced drag from those stubby wings at low speed. Doesn’t give you much get out of jail if you drop low and slow! Edited Thursday at 12:13 PM by jakee

I have some 50 in my basement (I've been at this for a very long time). No actual gas turbines - they are very cool but a real PITA to operate.

When RIAT was at Cottesmore plane spotters used to be allowed into the farmer’s field just off the arrival end of the runway. Until one day the B1B display bird held on the brakes as it ran up the reheat for a performance takeoff, and the gathered crowd found out what 4 of the biggest afterburners ever made felt like from less than a hundred meters away. They cracked down on access to the surroundings after that. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iVdUi-8F8P0
