Setting the standard

Recommended Posts

With all due respect to the very sincere and well intentioned people, I really think America needs to stop saying that they set the global standard for decorum, rule of law and democracy in the world.

Yes once upon a time that was true, but American politics is now a clown show. Trump is the ring master, but the list is endless JD Vance, Mike Johnson, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell… The Supreme Court, Elon Musk,

The so called rule of law has been shown to be an illusion- if it wasn’t Trump would be in jail many years ago.

Empires rise and fall, the American public are the biggest victims, it will hurt the rest of the world as well. Sorry Kamala but I disagree with your view that America still sets the standard.

It’s incredible that in the past 25 years we have had 9/11, Global Financial Crisis, Brexit, and Covid. Yet the current American crisis feels like all of those pale in comparison.

It’s sad/ironic that the Trumpians use ‘American exceptionalism‘ give themselves permission to tear down the relationships and standards on which it was built.

I don’t know that the jig is already up, given that most major countries are grappling with the same stuff, but it definitely seems like the empire’s on a downward slope

It’s ok, the US is tied with Cambodia in 13th place, North Korea is at 17. I was actually surprised at how low the US is on the list (granted there will be other lists with different results)

If this is the standard, I'll pass:

Unimaginable a few years ago that America would be in this situation

Going to need a UN security force to allow for fair elections soon.

Come on now guys! Surely if the message of superiority is repeated often enough by politicians for the domestic audience. Superiority can be accepted as fact. After all just look at the GOP messaging machine and its success in re-branding trump. Obviously America is the victim of actions by outsiders and blame needs to be laid. Perhaps Canada can be added to Mexico as the reason for America's failures.

Are mostly dead now.

Exactly, so maybe it's time to move on to contemporary accomplishments, or lack of accomplishments, whichever is appropriate.

Every time a politician drags out a WW2 vet as a prop for his speech I wonder if our fixation on that amazing accomplishment is healthy.
