The primary things missing in this country today are common decency and respect. Millions have come to this country to live under that flag. The military buries their own under that flag every day, Every Gold Star mother that has buried their child in some war is presented a flag. Oaths are taken with the flag hoisted, we lower the flag in honor of those that we deem leaders - of all kinds.

Show some respect to the flag. Treat it with the reverence it deserves.

I agree with you about respect being missing (used to be that some respect was automatic; you could lose it, but you earned some simply by being human). I disagree that it should be mandated.

But then I started a thread a few years ago about respect -- does it have to be earned or is it given? I think I was one of the few who said it's given, not earned. You can earn more respect from me, and you can lose respect, but you get some simply by being human.

A difference between now and, say, 60 years ago, is that in some parts of the country respect was only automatic for white people. Others (furriners etc) could earn it individually, but were never granted it as a class. That's a generational change that's still happening, and part of this administration is trying to roll that back.

Morning, brother.

Would you have pissed on or burned the flag at those services? No. Out of respect. so, why are other times OK?

You don't seriously believe that it should only be legal to do things that you personally like to do.

So why pose such a stupid question?

I hear you but cannot bring myself to see it so cut and dried. Our Flag is a powerful symbol and a justification for what many do, be it right or wrong in any single persons opinion. Unfortunately it is also a powerful tool for misdirection which is the conundrum; the problem with powerful symbols is you never know who is going to find a way to use them. Gott mit uns.

Agreed.

Not the case in public protests. It's intended to hurt us to the core.

We're gonna have to disagree on this point, but I still loves ya. ;)

Hi Keith,

Re:  The primary things missing in this country today are common decency and respect.

“Have you no sense of decency?” Sen. Joseph McCarthy is asked in hearing | June 9, 1954 | HISTORY

The lack of respect & decency comes from the top; POTUS.

He totally lacks both attributes; been that way his entire life.

Maybe a $10,000 dollar fine and a week on the food bank line would teach you to respect it.

Maybe if we started by changing the mantra to: I pledge allegiance to the United States of America and the Flag we use to represent the values of our nation.

"The country started goin to shit when the liberals took God and the pledge out of schools." And, then I tells 'em - you do know the pledge was a marketing plan developed by a socialist selling American flags right? - Just to see that fucked up look they get on their face. :)

Trump's executive orders target cashless bail systems

If there ever was proof of a small mind, these things are it.

The opposition to cashless bail is just insane. Not that you couldn’t genuinely think (for some reason) that cash bail is a better system, but that every argument against cashless that I’ve ever seen is just ‘OMG we shouldn’t be releasing any suspected criminals back onto the streets!!’ and it’s just like… that’s what fucking BAIL is.

At least cashless bail the only deciding factor on release or not is your danger to the community. Not the old ‘hey we think you’re pretty damn heinous but if you can lay your hand on a couple million bucks then who really cares?’

Also - incidentally, burning the flag is totally fine if its old.
The flag is representative of an ideal - you'd thing the flag shaggers would be more concerned about the principles behind the flag than the actual item itself, but no - the right has shown they are happy to piss all over the principles and wear the flag as underwear or a t-shirt as long as someone standing up for whats right isn't allowed to protest using it.

This ought to get me some push back: as a veteran and also a patriotic citizen is there anything you think Trump might do, or believe he is capable of doing based on his actions to date, that would cause you to take up arms against whichever police or armed forces he was using to commit the unforgivable offense? You know, the ostensible reason for the second amendment. Of course anyone, veterans or not, should feel free to opine.

No takers? No surprise, after all the Second Amendment is just a hypothetical empowerment. Maybe those with gun familiarity and marching skills can get their nut joining one of Trumps newly authorized "Quick Reaction Forces" to stop protests wherever he finds them irritating. Bullshit? Nope: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/08/additional-measures-to-address-the-crime-emergency-in-the-district-of-columbia/

Maybe, but in the apparent mean time we need time to contemplate the impact on society at large, and ourselves too, of Taylor Swifts engagement.

Maybe Taylor Swift should be on the Cracker Barrel logo.

As I recall, in Monty Python's bit about 'The Art of Camouflage," the first lesson was 'don't stand up.'

Thus, someone who's more dangerous with access to a Home Depot than you'd expect from a sporting goods emporium isn't likely to let on.  Just a guess.

I’ve always felt that any armed resistance is going to start with an “extremist” group who are more pissed off than Joe Average. As a result the government crackdown on them would probably have some level of public support. Also your Joe Average weapons aren’t really comparable to the tools the military have.
