parachutist 2 #26 August 26, 2013 grimmie If you are going to be a professional skydiver, perform like it. This problem extends all the way to the top. That's my impression after watching the PIA closing ceremony demo 6 months ago. First guy does a low 180 hook turn over the beach and digs a short trench in the sand before bouncing up, then re-landing sideways on his hip. I was imagining how that demo got organized - probably someone on the PA at Deland "Hey if anybody wants to do a beach jump...."
JerryBaumchen 1,466 #27 August 26, 2013 Hi Chris, Quote the PIA closing ceremony demo 6 months ago I probably was within spitting distance of you. And that was the impression that a lot of us took away from it. The other item of 'discussion' was whether it was a 'PIA ceremony.' Most of us concluded that it was just a load that got put together in DeLand and made the jump. Or it was a rather poor demo. JerryBaumchen
DSE 5 #28 August 27, 2013 JumpdudeWhy were those people on the field??? They should not have been on the field until after the skydivers landed!! Sure, the jumper could have steered away from that guy, but they should have been directed off the field until after the jumpers landed. It's their own damn fault! A-the approach to the field required that the flag carriers and other demo jumpers be over. It is a very tight stadium. A pro should be able to manage this. B-the landing area itself was very much clear, and plenty large. The problem was the demo jumper misjudged the toilet bowl effect that is quite common with stadium jumps. yoink 321 #29 August 27, 2013 stratostar but like you, I'm sure they would never plan to use base rigs and then jump out of a plane and then fly through the legs of the arch and also land on national park land................. would they, nope! Like any sport, we have our celebrities... and like many celebrities some think the rules don't apply to them.
D22369 0 #30 August 30, 2013 Good example as to why we don't allow *IDIOTS* on our demos! *** I edited your statement to more be more accurate. When I was a working jumper I was getting 10+ demo's a year working with three different dz's. on the DZ any fun or work jump I always swooped unless I was out of position or in traffic. Demo's however are different - there is no place for a swoop in one - a nice simple tip toe landing that looks effortless impresses people and is far safer. if someone is swooping in a demo it means someone let a fool onto the team and he should never be allowed to participate again - and the 'captain' obviously lacks the ability to use good judgement and shouldn't be in charge. just being a swooper doesn't make you an idiot - high performance landings just attract a lot of people who shouldn't perform them. RoyThey say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
