Brian Germain Canopy Course

Recommended Posts

I really want to do this next summer and I was wondering if I could get some feedback from people who have already taken it. What is the class structure like, i.e. jumping then debriefing with film or is it more classroom oriented? Is it meant for beginners like me or is it more of an advanced course? Was it worth it overall? Thanks in advance for your help.
Mike

I took Brian's course a couple years ago. Even though it was "General Canopy" course, there were people from 50-1500 jumps in it. Even people who proclaimed to be "swoopers" learned a lot. It was mostly classroom presentation/discussion rather than dedicated flying type of course. You do have some jumps and filmed landings, but even though we were rained out for 1 day, I don't feel like I missed out on its value. He goes into a lot of detail on how parachutes work, what makes them fly (and fall out of the sky), and how to apply that to better piloting.

Definitely worth it, and would recommend getting his book, 'Canopy and its Pilot' and reading it first. It will help reinforce a lot of the topics.

I agree, great book!

But I think you get one anyways at the course?

I'd also recommend looking into the Flight-1 curriculum.

It's the same course that Scott Miller travelled around and taught.

Essentially there are a few different canopy courses out there, all offering (in some ways) similar things and in other ways offering totally different approaches.

Try and ask around on WHAT people got out of the courses and then see which one seems to fit what you are looking for most.

Regardless of your choice, it's great to see you pursuing canopy flight education.

i took it last fall and highly recommend it. basically: we would have a classroom session, then go do some hop & pops to work on what he had taught us, then he would de-brief our landing videos and we'd discuss the up high canopy flight exercises we'd just worked on too. then we'd repeat the process adding new things. it's definatley meant for anyone wanting to learn how to be a better/ safer canopy pilot. and to me it was well worth it.

As a matter of fact, in about a month they are having one down at CSC. If you're going to it, I might be in class with you.

TAKE THE COURSE! TAKE THE COURSE! TAKE THE COURSE!
(caps intentional :)I took his course a year ago and I'm still learning from the topics that were discussed.
I'm still a newbe here, too, so don't let low jump numbers
keep you from taking the course. The very cool thing about Brian is that he can teach you at your skill level whatever that level might be.
