Yes, it almost seems like two things are happening. The lessons of WW 2 are being forgotten by a new generation and the balance of terror established by nuclear weapons is being eroded and tested.

Yes, its only a matter of time until Iran has its nuclear weapons at hand. No doubt with some Russian help for the quid pro quo of Iranian drones. Just as Russia helped North Korea with missile technology for its artillery ammo supplies.

A good time to be geographically removed from the hot spots and behind a NATO shield.

I think the bigger lessons of Russia in Afghanistan and the US in Vietnam are the more relevant lessons being forgotten.  The more aggressive countries are forgetting they can lose an occupation.

Not can, I'd argue that in these times it's foregone. Successful occupation requires merciless subjugation. The will to do so obviously yet exists in our vicious species; who could have guessed that it would be social media that best contained our basest instincts. Now the gooder news is that we have folks rich enough, and with sufficiently base instincts, to invest in killing social media. So we have that.

Also why Israel left Lebanon in 2000 after its war and occupation of south Lebanon.
