It's a Drone War now for all militaries

Recommended Posts

Cool to think that now Tanks  and IFV's can be taken out with something not much different from a DJI Mavik dropping a grenade or two. Hmm.. now what about all of our second amendment nutters realizing that the potential to right their wrongs are just a drone drop away. Let that thought detonate in your brains.

This has been coming for decades.  For us science fiction readers it's been one of the standard tropes for about 40 years now.  Technology (specifically connectivity) is making it a lot easier today.

There was a Star Trek episode "A Taste of Armageddon" where neighboring worlds were engaged in computer simulated war. They had a treaty where the "victims" were required to report for execution, dutifully lining up and awaiting their turn to enter the chamber to be atomized. No muss, no fuss, no crying, no burials, and no expensive reconstruction. Talk about cost savings through technology.

Hi Joe,

Like all things in warfare, that is all well and good as long as it ain't you.

In feudal Japan the samurai had the belief that bows and muskets where not as honorable a way to kill or be killed because with a sword you could feel your enemy die. To die with honor.

In WW 1 it was considered dishonorable to kill enemy pilots who had to bail out and who were under parachute.

Now thanks to technology honor is back. Because you can see the whites of their eyes as you fly your FPV drone right into the face of your enemy.

About twenty years ago Israel began to recognize the importance of drones. Shortly thereafter they dropped an order for US Apache gunships which were the tank killing warriors of the west. Drones became the answer more and more. Fast forward to 2020 and the Azerbaijani forces used drones as a central weapon to control the air and destroy tanks in their victory over Nagorno-Karabakh. Usually called the second war of this conflict. A good writeup by" Israel Defense Forces Tactical Command College" entitled Drones in the Nagorno-Karabakh War: Analyzing the Data

For the last three years the US department of defense has run twice yearly war games for drones. https://www.defensenews.com/digital-show-dailies/ausa/2020/10/12/us-army-solidifies-requirements-to-counter-small-drones/

Jamming, microwaves to destroy electronics, lasers, close range kinetic kill( think mini-gun with radar) and close in APS on vehicles are all currently in the mix to counter drones. All cost big $$.

IMO its only a matter of time till terrorists use commercial civilian drones to take out airliners. Bypassing airport security by flying right over it.Or politicians who don't have depleted uranium armor around them. AFAIK the presidential limo won't stop a RPG.

Isn't 2023 a great year to be alive?
