airdvr 210 #1 Posted September 13, 2023 On an EV road trip to promote green tech, the US Energy Secretary and her entourage couldn't find enough electric vehicle chargers Seriously? What a maroon.
wmw999 2,592 #2 September 13, 2023 From the story: Quote "It's just par for the course," a bystander driving an electric BMW told NPR. "They'll get it together at some point." Yep. In the earlier days of automobiles, people had to take gas cans tied to their bumpers because there was no guarantee of finding gasoline, particularly in remote areas. From an electric vehicle standpoint, I'd say the area between Georgia and Tennessee would definitely count as remote. And schedule has to cede to fuel availability. The biggest issue I see is the fracas over the port; that's just plain dumb. Especially letting it escalate to the point of calling the police. No, the Secretary's entourage is NOT more important than a local family with children. Billvon wrote a post recently about his family's trip to see family in their electric car; it took a little planning, because keeping the kids entertained while the car charged is an additional issue, but he said it was smooth as silk. Quiet, too. Wendy P.
airdvr 210 #3 September 13, 2023 Seems to me if you're planning a tour to promote EVs you might want to figure out...i dunno...where you're going to charge?
billvon 3,121 #4 September 13, 2023 Yep. Teslas do that for you; they figure out if you'll make your destination, and if not they will give you increasingly insistent prompts to detour to the closest charger that has space. For other cars Plugshare is a phone app that will do the same thing. It also checks to see if the charger is working, if there are already people there etc.

airdvr 210 #6 September 15, 2023 If this was a private company planning something similar the planner would probably be terminated for stupidity. Because it's the government we just look away. Unfortunately the bureaucracy is chock full of well payed idiots with way too much power.
SethInMI 174 #7 September 15, 2023 According to the article I read, they did do plenty of planning, and they had planned to stop at a certain rest area with chargers. Several chargers there were offline, and the advance party tried to sit in an unused available spot to reserve it, which is not nice, and got the cops called on them. There is a reason Ford GM Volvo Mercedes Benz and a host of other manf. have decided to join Tesla and use their charging network. Tesla's network is huge and it is very reliable. Volkswagen, which owns Electrify America, one of the crappy charging networks, is in a tough spot. Do they throw in the towel and join Tesla, or do they stick it out?
