Many dreams of independent business will be crushed in the next two years. Pilots, small service companies, restaurants, etc. But like Joe mentioned there will also be opportunity for the survivors.

No argument, Brother. Joe is right.

From Amazon to C-19; every business is going to have to scrap their five-year strategic plan and reinvent themselves. Gone are the days of brick & mortar to have a footprint. One of my favorite business stories thru this has been Texas Roadhouse. Not one day after they had to close as a non-essential business did they re-invent themselves into a "Pick up dinner for the family and cook at home" business. It was an awesome process. You called and your choices were dinner for 2, 4, 6, or any multiples of 2. They had the whole dinner in a bag or box. It came with bread, salad, veggies, dessert, etc. Your only choice to make was type of steak.

They had a line going and you did not wait. Literally grab & go. When they could expand to cooking, but not allowing customers inside, same process, but now everything was cooked. Innovation will remain the key ingredient for all businesses.

For Stan, I don't know if it was just time, the willingness to re-invent, etc. But, it is the end of an institution. Best words ever; you need to go to Stan's.

Evolution doesn't favor the biggest, fastest or strongest.  It favors those that adapt best to changing circumstances.

IMO Stan failed to plan for succession. The fight with his former partner is a clue. Certainly his children or estate would be reluctant to work 8-12 hours a day, seven days a week. Nowadays few people will make such a work commitment. But he had a lifetime to find another partner or employee to manage the business.

Perhaps too much an emphasis on quality over circumstance of his personal loss to operations.

It can be hard to find someone to buy even a successful small business -- many people who want one, want one of their own. Or they want to be an investor, and a business where you have to actually work isn't as attractive. There have been a number that have closed here in the last couple of years just due to retirement and no one to buy, and we're actually a very hospitable environment for small local businesses.
