gowlerk 2,277 #2 May 1, 2020 (edited) Yes, originally this drug was developed as a possible treatment for Ebola and Marburg virus disease, where it was a disappointing failure. However it was later found to be potentially useful for SARS and MERS, both related Corona viruses. It has been shown to have a positive effect on many Covid-19 patients. Even potentially more important is that it shows that there is hope for therapies, possibly drug combinations that work like HIV treatments. It is a good sign for the future and one more reason I would prefer to get the virus myself later rather than sooner. It is also the reason that shelter-in-place orders may end up saving a lot of lives - because it slows the progress of the pandemic until drugs like Remdesivir get out of the testing phase.
