Remdesivir?

Recommended Posts

FDA approves remdesivir as emergency use for coronavirus treatment

The FDA’s action increases access by allowing any doctor “to prescribe remdesivir for their patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19,” Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told NBC News.

But that does not mean the drug should be used for all hospitalized patients.

“Ongoing clinical trials will define which patients will best benefit from remdesivir treatment,” Schaffner told the network.

Yes, originally this drug was developed as a possible treatment for Ebola and Marburg virus disease, where it was a disappointing failure. However it was later found to be potentially useful for SARS and MERS, both related Corona viruses. It has been shown to have a positive effect on many Covid-19 patients. Even potentially more important is that it shows that there is hope for therapies, possibly drug combinations that work like HIV treatments. It is a good sign for the future and one more reason I would prefer to get the virus myself later rather than sooner.

Agreed.  It is also the reason that shelter-in-place orders may end up saving a lot of lives - because it slows the progress of the pandemic until drugs like Remdesivir get out of the testing phase.

I watched the PBS Frontline "Coronavirus Pandemic" show last week. Interesting thing was in Washington state, they used remdesivir on patient #1:

Hi Robert,

'Washington vs Washington.'  That was a really good program.
