Wisconsin Teen Threatened with Arrest for Instagram Post About C19

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know what charges they planned to file. A lot more detail here:

The very next day, Patrol Sergeant Cameron Klump from Marquette County Sheriff's Department showed up on the family's doorstep. He was there under orders from Sheriff Joseph Konrath to demand that Amyiah and her father, Richard Cohoon, remove Amyiah's Instagram posts. If they refused, Klump said the family faced charges for disorderly conduct and Klump told them he would "start taking people to jail," according to the suit.

I wonder if they discussed this with the DA first.

The family has filed a 1st Amendment suit against the law enforcement personnel.

I have a feeling they are going to win that suit.

I'm not sure about the "U.P." (upper peninsula), but down here in Wisconsin, you get a citation for disorderly conduct. You don't get arrested.

What about the character assassination the school did?

Free speech cuts both ways.

We don't know the whole story. If it goes to court there will be sworn testimony, but I think the point about this is that the family apparently isn't seeking a big payday; they want the LEOs to acknowledge and apologize, and they want the expenses associated with the litigation covered. That to me is why this looks genuine. But I wasn't there. I hope the LEO who knocked on the door had a bodycam. I automatically assumed it was a Barney Fife / JBT situation, but once again, I was not a witness. There is sometimes more going on in cases like this than we actually hear about. It's also possible they are fishing for extra comp through the catchall language in the complaint. I dunno. I'm not a lawyer, either.
