Some of us are fortunate to not live in congested cities, have the need to use mass transit public transportation, or having a critical need to go to work during a pandemic.

If you're serious about flattening the curve why would you allow people to be packed into the subway?  I get that they need to work.  Someone needs to remove that option.

I don't know, maybe they're all going to church, hurry lock them in, deny them medical coverage and let them die before they get the rest of us!

Meanwhile, nobody says a damn thing about all the horse racing that's still going on.  A hundred horses per track, per day with hundreds of more handlers.

These are the numbers from the site that YOU recommended.

So what?  I didn't recommend making a comparison between nations based on a false interpretation of the data.  It's what we have, but interpreting it to draw the conclusion you want to draw is DISHONEST.

I simply posted the data, it's you and gowlerk that are drawing conclusions based on numbers that you said were meaningless.

That's a really fucking sick way of looking at it dude, especially since the growth rate has slowed and things are starting to flatten out.  It's almost like you're hoping for higher death rates than the rest of the world.

You kind of have to tho if the U.S is going to hit your quota of 1 million covid deaths within the next 18 months.  Personally, I think this too will go down on your ever growing list of failed prophesies.

It kinda has to for other reasons, too.
his nemesis has a better chance of being re-elected the lower the death toll is.

Yes, it is - due to the restrictions in place.  Once those are relaxed, as Trump supporters are demanding, what do you think will happen?

You know, it's funny, because Gowlerk posted some data that was 100% correct, and your reply was "Are you just being intellectually dishonest, or do you not understand the concept of rates?"

At the same time Nancy P. can go to hell. The idea that someone would use this opportunity to slow payments to their fellow Americans so they could get some of their agenda in a bill is disgusting. This is not about you wining Nancy its about helping Americans NOW.

And then Thomas Massie (R-Ky) slowed those payments in order to win some political points.

Meanwhile, all that bailout money is gone, all snatched up by big companies before the small businesses it was meant for could get that assistance.  But the Democrats who were calling for oversight on that?  You think they should "go to hell."

They're not "packed into the subway."  Geez, think before you post.

From Mar 21:

The Coronavirus outbreak has brought much of public life in New York City to a halt, and it’s emptying its transit system. Ridership is down across the board: 60 percent on the subways, 49 percent on buses, 90 percent on Metro-North and 67 percent on Long Island Rail Road as of Tuesday. Commuters are tweeting videos of eerily vacant train cars at rush hour, and the cover of this week’s New Yorker features an illustrated Grand Central Terminal, empty except for a lone man sweeping.

I know right, could you imagine if things really got out of hand.  "OMG, Iceland had 360,000 covid deaths!  Meh, no biggie, the U.S had 1 Million!

That seems more than just a little hypocritical, when a lot of the criticism for the right is based on not implementing better social distancing tactics.

you cannot tell me that everyone in that subway is on their way to and from an essential job.

Nope, just facts.  Rates have always been more meaningful in trying to compare and understand problems between various countries.

true, should probably compare testing rates between those countries too.

It is all here.

No need to call people here sick. it is your American celebrity doctors who come on TV and claim increased deaths is just the price to pay.

Not in any kinda of meaningful or relevant way other than to demonstrate why it might be a bit ridiculous to compare Iceland to the U.S with raw numbers.  I wasn't trying to be a smart ass when I said "no biggie, just sayin."

Except it was big enough that you kept pressing your point for several more posts - that point being that rates are misleading and raw numbers are important.

As I said - high horse, you, not good.

Nope.  The comparison of both raw numbers was meaningless.  The subsequent posts were about the rate of covid testing and the geographical limitations that would prevent the U.S from testing as quickly as Iceland.

Sorry, that doesn't wash. Regardless of how much weight you were putting on it you posted the raw numbers for a reason, and that reason was not for them to add zero meaning to the conversation.

Right - so do you not also feel that there are geographical factors at play vs smaller and more densely populated countries that would naturally slow the spread of Covid-19 in the US and skew the infection rate comparison at this stage of the game?

Yes, if that's what you want to talk about, great.   I'm not trying to attack Europe or anything like that.  I feel for these people, and I'm sure they're doing their best to cope.

But ya, obviously density plays a role both globally and locally.  Another thread made the point about how culture may play a role in higher death rates.  Areas with heavy tourism seem to play a role as well.  There's still a chance that the U.S could surpass rates in Europe if we're not careful.

Anyway,  I don't know, I guess others here rather talk about the raw numbers and attribute  them to Trump.  I suppose that's ok too, but at least we're talking about it from both perspectives.

I worked for a man that was a veteran of WWII and Korea.  He said it was a funny quirk of war.  You're sitting eating MREs and a 1/4 mile away there's guys who think their world is coming to an end because of a fire fight.

This has become a very regional thing.

If I don't venture out of my county I'm fairly certain the risk is minimal.  So, instead of listening to the national news (whose job is to scare you) I look more locally.

The biggest problem is that the larger the population, the more chance there is that a single jerk exists. In NYC there's a pretty good selection of jerks, mentally ill, homeless, stupid and whatever else. And in a congested place, they have a greater chance of exposing someone innocent to their baggage.

I noticed that in the "lowered ridership" figures, they seemed to correlate pretty well with "money and ability to stay home." Metro North services Connecticut, after all.

And maybe, just maybe, if the ridership is cut, maybe the number of buses and trains are cut too? I know they have where I live

I'd imagine the point is that there aren't any leaders in Europe (or anywhere else for that matter) who claimed to have stopped the spread of Covid when their country only had ten cases, or that they would soon have no cases at all, or that it would magically disappear on its own in April anyway.

One redneck equals one jerk in the C-19 equation.
