I suspect he has realised he's losing a lot of the more moderate end of his party. This is his way of trying to get people to associate back to the party and some of its more sensible tenets rather than Trump vs the world.

Today's fun Trump fact: DHS was looking at separating kids from their parents at the border and then shipping the kids to Guantanamo. 

Guess why they didn't do it.  Was it that someone finally realized that putting kids in cages was something that only brutal, inhuman dictators did?  Was it because putting them in the same place we put terrorists was nuts?  Nope.  It was because the "optics" would be bad.
