After gunfire erupted around 04:00 local time on Sunday, Jemel Roberson [the armed security guard at the bar], 26, chased down an attacker and knelt on his back until police arrived.
Moments after police came on the scene, an officer opened fire on Roberson, who was black, killing him.

How the hell are these people trained??

This is the reason I and my partners in security at our church wear a large SECURITY tag when on duty.

If something bad is going down and LE shows up they are looking for threats, not allies. Allies must be quickly identified.

Do you know how insane that sounds?

And just to bring everyone else up to speed -

Several drunks were ejected from a bar. One returned with a gun and started firing, striking the bartender and several patrons. A bystander called police. Jemel Robison, an armed security guard on duty there, quickly subdued the shooter. He got him on the floor with a gun to his head and a knee in his back. He was wearing a uniform with a hat and a vest that both said "SECURITY."

Police showed up. Bystanders started yelling "he's security! He's security!" They then opened fire, killing Robison.

Robison leaves behind a 9 month old daughter. He was also working as a church musician and was planning to become a police officer.

The interview for the next armed security position will only have one statement: Don't be black.

This is a proper travesty. The 'good guy with a gun' did everything rightand was still shot by police with itchy trigger fingers.
'Thoughts and Prayers' to his baby daughter.... >:(

>And people of color will go even more ballistic because they have lost the ability to reason.

That's . . . quite racist of you. Reminiscent of the days when blacks were considered "naturally shiftless."

Feel free to describe the pain and suffering Black parents are going to feel over losing their kid in any terms you wish to enumerate upon. But mobs and grieving people are not known for making sane or rational decisions or comments during times like this.

It was not, nor is it a "racist" comment.

He is the victim of ignorance and faulty gear. AND as in the movie: "12 Angry Men," of an ignorant and callous jury.

Could you at least spell "losing" correctly? It's not "loosing".

But yes, you show a lack of understanding if you think "the blacks" all think alike or speak and feel in some sort predisposed way because they're "the blacks".

Edit: Thank you.

If you think blacks have lost the ability to reason - that's about as racist as it gets. No matter how much you try to appeal to emotion.

(BTW trying to justify it, because you feel you can _prove_ that blacks can't reason, just makes it worse. It's what every white supremacist argues day in and day out.)

It's easy to identify a threat. He is large and has dark skin.

The idea of implicit/unconscious bias is a relatively new concept in scientific research.

IIRC, A recent study showed that typical citizens showed bias in reaction time toward blacks as a threat. The same test showed that while police officers also had a bias in reaction time, it didn't translate to whether or not the police officers decided to shoot as it did with the civilian subjects.

So given that, when it comes to a trained officer's decision to shoot a suspect, there are other factors involved rather than just race. Perhaps in most instances it has nothing to do with race at all?

Also, not sure if it was the same study, but there was also bias among black police officer's reaction times against blacks as well.

Don't forget large and male, not just dark. Training helps, but all of us have built in biases. It doesn't mean that an officer is going to automatically shoot. It just makes it a little more likely. When you add that to the more known factor of general police harassment of black males, such as stop and frisk, and driving while black, it equals a feeling among the community of fearing the police.

Again, that's not what the study showed. The cops' bias in reaction time did not translate to their ultimate decision to shoot or not, as it did with civilian subjects.

Also, I don't necessarily disagree with your previous statement. It should be noted that this is the only study of it's kind and focused only on Denver, so as always, more studies are needed.

What Would Jebus Carry?

He instructed his disciples to carry a sword.

Luke 22:36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.

I am too old to use one effectively therefore, I prefer a 9mm or 40S&W.

nicely cherry-picked. you forgot Matthew:

Matthew 26:52-54
Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

and

Romans 12:19
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

but of course hypocrisy is your specialty. Not to mention all the passages that describe selling thieves if they cannot repay you, and the advocation of genocide and murder, rape etc.

I am sure you can find whatever hypocrisy you need at any given moment in time....

Nice quoting out of context.

In the first instance, Jesus is knowingly going to His trial and ultimately His crucifixion. The scriptures had to be fulfilled. He did not want Peter to defend him.

In the second, Paul is instructing us to not give way to our wrath, to let God provide our vengeance. It is better to be kind to those who have offended us considering v. 18, "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men."

The operative word is possible.

Agreed. And if you can't live peaceably, what does Jesus say?

Matthew: "I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

No? Then let's go with Luke:

Luke: "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back."

And, like motionscribe's rabbit hole with jakee, we are back to the justification of self-defense and war.

Without the Holy Spirit to guide you it is impossible to discern what the scripture is revealing to you. That is outside the call to Christ.

Ya, sorry if I made things weird with that whole pedicure thing. . .:D

I thought it funny, funny haha.

I am a member of the Church of God. We believe in foot washing. Well, they do, I don't. Every time, which is not often, our pastor calls for a foot washing I avoid the ceremony.

I understand the reasoning to teach humility and subservience but there is something that gets to me like using someone else's toothbrush or wearing their underwear.

I pray for forgiveness.

I see it now, Ron arrives at the pearly gates and Peter says, "Ok, we have you down for following your national leaders, good, following the word of Christ, good.....wait a minute, you didn't do the foot washing thing. Sorry man, you really needed to do the foot washing thing."

I can see that; it would be difficult for me too, as touching someone's bare feet with your bare hands is a pretty intimate act. I mean, if it is another man, is it ok if you don't make eye contact? What if you look down and the person washing you looks up and waggles his eyebrows up and down? What would you do? Go all aggro and try to break his nose with your knee? Or one up him and slowly lick your top lip? Or give him the subtle bird by scratching your nose with your middle finger?

Fun stuff to think about.
It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

A feel-good story to complement this sad one:

Police were getting ready to shoot a homeless man when a woman put herself between the victim and the gun. She talked both sides down; the man is now under arrest (but alive.) Because of her heroism, a potential tragedy was averted. We need more like her.

==============================================
Meet Grace McKinnon: Black Women Are the Superheroines Who Don’t Wear Capes
Wednesday 5:29pm
The Root

It seems as though the number of black men killed at the hands of police increases by at least one every day. The stories have become so commonplace as to somewhat desensitize the public to their occurrence.

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, at approximately 3:30 p.m., one story that could have ended with that same narrative was changed by the brave actions of one black woman—24-year-old Grace McKinnon.

McKinnon is a licensed graduate social worker who was on her way back to her office after visiting the client of a colleague at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., when she said she noticed a confrontation occurring between U.S. Capitol Police officers and a homeless man by the name of Anthony Williams.

She immediately stopped her car, got out and began recording.

“I knew I had to help,” McKinnon told The Root. “I saw it happen. I had to get involved.”

Grace McKinnon recorded the moments when she saved a black man from dying at the hands of police.

Her video recording, which has since gone viral, begins at the moment she approached the situation in the intersection.

As her recording begins, a police officer can be seen with his service weapon trained on Williams. He notices McKinnon and says in a pleading voice, “You see him trying to shoot me? I ain’t done nothing to nobody.”

The officer commands Williams to get down on the ground. Williams is obviously very agitated and seems to be having a mental break of sorts. Throughout the entire video, McKinnon speaks with him calmly and pleads with him to obey the officer’s commands.

“They are killing us out here,” she tells him. “It’s not worth dying over, bruh.”

The officer at one point tells McKinnon she should move away from Williams because he has a knife. Williams tells the officer that they already confiscated the one knife that he had, and this seems to be corroborated in the video where at one point, the knife can be seen lying in the crosswalk.

McKinnon told The Root that, at one point, Williams stood behind her, making her the barrier between himself and the police.

“In that moment, it was fight or flight,” she said. “I wasn’t focused on guns or knives. It was a matter of getting that young man to get down on the ground and comply with police.”

Eventually, McKinnon is able to get Williams to calm down and comply. He can be seen in the video lying down on his stomach and placing his hands behind his back. He was handcuffed and arrested.

McKinnon said police then asked her to leave once they had Williams in custody.

Although the U.S. Capitol Police said in its official statement that Williams was in possession of several knives, McKinnon said she never saw police retrieve any other knives and none were removed from Williams in her presence.

Her observation seems to be somewhat corroborated by the charges U.S. Capitol Police reported—Williams only received one weapons charge.
. . .
McKinnon, who is also a violin player with a master’s degree from Howard and a bachelor’s degree from Salisbury University, told The Root that the gravity of the entire situation has not hit her yet.

“It still really hasn’t dawned on me how big this was,” she said. “I have never done that before—stood in front of a gun—but I am always out here trying to help people. It may be amazing and heroic to others, but I was just being myself. Given a fight or flight situation, I always fight.”
