What happens when climate change deniers study the science

It snowed in Houston...that's a good thing Right? I'm supposed to be banned, so back to it.

Well, "one off" weather events, even extreme ones, aren't really accurate ways to measure AGW.

As a counterpoint, Northeast Wisconsin had no measurable snow until December. Again. Something like the 3rd year in a row. Rather unusual, from a "historic" perspective.

And the permafrost and sea ice in the Arctic are in serious trouble.
That's a bad thing, by the way.

I love how every time you show up, which is often, you need to remind us that you said you'd never come back.

It's a Self Imposed Banning...I lift it when ever I feel like it, except those times it's put into place by Bill, then it's several weeks. Deep Breaths Now, it will relax your troubled mind.:P

The Spin:

Trump: US could use some ‘good old Global Warming’ to heat up cold states
http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/366734-trump-us-could-use-some-good-old-global-warming-to-heat-up-cold

The reality, costs in 2017 are over $400 billion dollars:
Megadisasters devastated America this year. They’re going to get worse.
Storms, fires, floods, and heat caused unprecedented destruction in 2017. Why?
"2017 is about to become the most expensive disaster year in US history, costing nearly $400 billion in damages."

"The three storms—Harvey, Irma and Maria—were all enhanced," Trenberth said. "Bigger, stronger and longer lasting because of climate change as manifested through exceptionally high ocean temperatures."

"A common feature of the hurricanes and the wildfires is that there have been many warnings from scientists and others," explained Kevin Trenberth, a climate scientist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research. "With climate change, one slows or stops the problem (mitigation) or adapts to the problem (builds resilience) or suffers the consequences. In Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, and Santa Rosa, it is clear that the people have chosen the last option."...

"Global warming is an infinitely flexible, unscientific, un-falsifiable theory which can be stretched to accommodate any observation."

"Whatever the observation, the climate explainers have their theory - their infinitely adaptable theory, which they claim is science. Warm weather confirms their worst fears. Cold weather is waved away. Whatever the observation, the explainers shamelessly adapt their theory to provide an explanation, based on their "scientific" theory which cannot be falsified by any conceivable observations, event an abrupt plunge into a new ice age." >"Global warming is an infinitely flexible, unscientific, un-falsifiable theory which can be
>stretched to accommodate any observation."

Let's take those one at a time.

"Infinitely flexible" - There are plenty of counterexamples here.

"Unscientific" - it is based on the scientific principle of th.e greenhouse effect, first proposed by Arrhenius in 1896. Since then that effect has been validated thousands of times.

"un-falsifiable" - it is eminently falsifiable. If CO2 concentrations had increased and temperatures had stayed the same (or declined, as deniers have claimed they will) it would be falsified. That hasn't happened, despite breathless headlines from deniers like "there's only one problem with climate change - it ended in 1998!" Indeed, it has closely matched predictions first made in 1990.

So we have 27 years of proof now that AGW is indeed proceeding according to theory

You can call it whatever you like. There are always extremes of weather. But the AVERAGE temperatures are going up, no matter how desperately you want to deny that basic fact.

China can lead way on climate change
Unlike his US counterpart, President Xi Jinping with his push for a huge carbon trading market knows a cut in polluting emissions can bring economic benefits

The global praise that greeted Beijing’s unveiling of plans to create the world’s largest carbon trading market was for good reason. With the United States having withdrawn from the Paris climate change accord, China has been eyed to take a leadership role....

President Xi Jinping, who is behind the drive, well knows the benefits for growth and development, a reality refuted by his American counterpart, Donald Trump, who denies that air pollution is causing global warming. The creation of a clean energy industry has brought billions of dollars and thousands of jobs and China is now a world leader in numerous fields,...

Xi used the term “torch-bearer” rather than “leader” at the Communist Party’s recent 19th congress when referring to China’s role in the fight against climate change. But the introduction of the carbon trading market gives cause to consider taking up the leadership."

According to a 2016 public survey conducted by the Centre for Communication and Public Opinion Survey at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post received a credibility rating of 6.54, the highest credibility score among the various paid newspapers in Hong Kong

While the US forfeits leadership under trump China and XI recognize opportunity and profit.

Trump cedes green energy jobs and leadership to China

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-energy-green-chinese-solar-paris-climate-accord-renewable-1208-story.html

the Chinese have recognized that green energy will provide millions of jobs in the future. That’s why they are heavily promoting development of their renewable fuels sector — not just as assemblers, but also as innovators. The Chinese government has invested vast sums in research and development for solar cells, solar panels and solar technology as well as the various subsystems to deliver that power. It heavily promotes startup companies to sell these innovations in domestic and overseas markets.

And it’s working. Of the 8.1 million renewable energy jobs that exist around the world today, 3.5 million are in China, and fewer than 1 million in the U.S. Five of the six largest solar-module manufacturing firms in the world are Chinese. In short, China’s renewable energy sector is eating our lunch.

Without the Ozone Treaty You’d Get Sunburned in 5 Minutes
Turning 30 this month, the Montreal Protocol was a landmark

environmental success that serves as a model for addressing other problems, although it also has some unfinished business.

'Great success': Scientists salute Montreal Protocol for shrinking ozone hole

American scientists say they now have “direct proof” that links the shrinking ozone hole over the Antarctic to the Montreal Protocol, the worldwide effort started in the 1980s to ban production of ozone-depleting chemicals.

“This is very encouraging news,” said Kimberly Strong, a professor of atmospheric physics at the University of Toronto. “This study provides clear evidence that the Montreal Protocol is working.”...

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) previously reported that the ozone hole, which forms over the Antarctic every September, grew to only 19.6 million square kilometres in 2017 (about 2.5 times the size of the United States), the smallest it had been in 30 years.

Had the world not intervened and allowed CFC production to continue unabated, some projections have suggested 17 per cent of the world’s ozone would’ve been destroyed by 2020 and 67 per cent by 2065. Skin cancer rates would have “soared.”

“It’s a nice reminder that the danger was not oversold — it really was a big problem — but we solved it,” Tarasick said.

Trump is working on banning all those words.
