Military Parade

***To no one in particular, a military flyover of several of our most advanced aircraft will do just fine IMO, as a reminder to the world what we are capable of.

Maybe complete with a nuclear bomb drop.

On Washington? A waste of a perfectly good thermonuclear device.

How is anyone not appalled by Trumps demand for a military parade? That he seeks a triumph to aggrandize himself, not our soldiers or a crucial military victory, should cause his most blindered supporters to reel.

As a nation we need to reset our views on what the words "support the troops" really mean. I say so because it is now to where anything less than jingoism is considered unpatriotic. That's not right.

We are not Sparta. We have other values beyond martial values. Also, European military history or the military history of banana republics is not our history.

This is all because, like a crow who is easily distracted by shiny things or a child who wants the other kids toys, our President went to France and saw a military parade and now he wants one, too. There is no more to it. It is just that absurd.

That is exactly what I see. It's surreal isn't it?

Why? Many of his supporters are no more thoughtful than he is. Remember, much of his support came from the least educated Americans, to whom reflection and thoughtful consideration are considered characteristics of out-of-touch effete liberals.

Consider Ron. Trump has asked for a parade, therefore it must be good for America. Period.

The idea that the US doesn't have a firm defense budget is an even bigger fantasy than anything that has come out of Trump's mouth since the election. Further, what the US military currently needs from a budget and what the US really needs from its military are two entirely different things.

******Also, a member of the SOF community and I always hated parade formations. However, I think a military parade in D.C. would be a good thing overall. Not for President Trump but for the American people. I believe he knows what he is doing.

Yes, cadet bone spurs is very wise. Obviously God is guiding him.

This is why SC is going downhill. You look at post #28 by SkyDekker right above yours and the way he responds. Then, you look at your snarky comment attacking ones' religious beliefs. If he was Muslim or of less than legal status you'd be tripping over your "embrace multiculturalism" tongue. Stop attacking the man's belief system and debate the topic.

Debate the topic?

Americans were stupid enough to be gaslighted by an orange con-man who advocates sexual assault on women. And you want to take the "high road"? You want to debate a topic?

“Look, having nuclear—my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart —you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you’re a conservative Republican they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune—you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners—now it used to be three, now it’s four—but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.”

You mean have meaningful discussions like this? Or how about a meaningful discussion on why the Dutch are such good speed skaters? Or how about a thorough debate on how thankful the Koreans are for the Japanese?

Yes, debate.

Because one doesn't enlighten people by calling them stupid, only by meeting them where they are, and treating them with respect. Calling them stupid only really works for PE coaches, military drill sergeants, and assholes in strongly hierarchical organizations (like PE departments and the military).

The impossible to debate can (and should) be ignored. Because they're often looking for attention, and ignoring them robs them of it. And even if one doesn't "convince" others to come all the way over or one's own "side," usually once they start to see that people who disagree with them have rationales, they're less likely to join the echo-chamber gangs.

Yes, debate.

Perfect, let's go. If BIGUN really wanted a debate I am sure he could have used the ON TOPIC or SERIOUS tag in his titled. I do believe we have some rules regarding that in this forum.

Since he didn't, I thought a stupid joke about a stupid man was allowable. But if that hits too close to home to somebody who supports a 5 time draft dodger calling for a military parade, then so be it.

I see a grand military parade as nothing more than a giant dick swinging contest and will debate in kind. But if somebody wants to convince me that this grand parade is more than that......let's do it.

If not, then this is probably one of the more stupid topics to have a serious debate on.

While I agree that the parade itself is a pretty stupid topic, the fact that the CinC seems to need one to "swing his dick" around isn't.

The petty, immature, narcissistic, grandiose behavior of the Mango Mussolini is seriously frightening.

Throw in the double standards that he and his supporters adhere to and it's even more so.

That was before the internet made it downright easy to never read an article or opinion piece that didn't perfectly match your world view. At least when watching Network News or reading a newspaper there was the chance that you'd hear about something you hadn't thought about and it might make you think "you know, maybe there is a little more to this that I thought." But we've now pretty much eliminated that threat for many many people.

That said, for me it wouldn't seem like a real military parade if it isn't in black and white with Krushchev waving from Lenin's Tomb.

Do you mean Khrushchev, Lennin, et al , cheering on Mr. Putin. Putin achieving everything that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics couldn't do from 1922 to 1991. Despite the millions of sacrifices.

So much for so little. A couple hookers in a gilded Moscow hotel room. Sacrificing their bodies for Mother Russia.

No, it's just that those are the images I grew up with. When Krushchev was show the door in 1964 it didn't seem real to me. I was born in '53 and couldn't imagine The Soviet Union without Krushchev.

The problem is that Ron's belief system is intrinsically linked with his political beliefs... or at least he claims it is when it suits him.

When democrats are in power he judges them by biblical standards and finds them wanting. When Republicans are in power it doesn't matter what their personal morality is, they are instruments of god's will therefore everything is how it should be!

No one should be stopped from calling out the inconsistency (or blatant hypocrisy) in another poster's political argument just because they've wrapped it around their faith. It doesn't provide immunity from criticism.

I will have to apologize, but I have a hard time trying to have a reasonable debate with somebody who supports a guy who:

* Advocates assaulting women.
* On average lies or tells a mistruth multiple times a day.
* Attacks a gold star family.
* Attacks Mexican Immigrants.
* Makes fun of a disabled person.
* Hires foreign agents after being told they are.
* Advocates for the jailing of his political opponent.
* Has public outbursts about the size of his button.
* Calls his opponents names.
* refuses to read his national intelligence briefing, but allows those without
clearance to read it instead.
* Calls his opponents Traitors.
* Actively undermines a free press.
* Supports white supremacists.
* Is a racist.

All those things get glossed over and there is no serious debate about that. But we should have serious debate about a grand military parade.....

I find it interesting that, in general, the right wing mocks and vilifies political correctness and advocates for honest, no-holds-barred, genuine discourse, even if it's offensive. And anyone who gets offended is a special snowflake who needs their safe space. When the left wing is in power, that is.

When the right wing is in power, the call is "why can't people discuss things politely without attacking?"

To answer that rhetorical question, it's because you cannot politely discuss the issue of women's rights (for example) with a man who advocates grabbing women's pussies because you can get away with it. You can't have a reasonable conversation with someone who refers to you as "crooked Bigun" whenever they use your name. You can't overlook someone's belief system when they use that belief system to claim that climate change is a Chinese conspiracy.

This gets at how deeply the situation has sunk. It seems that every day brings a new low. All the things on your list are just the new normal for the POTUS. I know, he’s not our leader, he’s in the US. But even so, the US Is so powerful that it matters for all of us.

We all know that it’s probably just a matter of time till he is forced to deal with a crisis. And we all know he is not up to the task.

I've not seen that as anything but the exception as long as I've been a member. It's never been the norm, at least not in SC. (To be fair. the mods have always done a pretty good job of keeping things from getting out of hand.)

I get it. It became personal for you about me. You would be incorrect about my continued support. But, that's OK - our dialogue has been deteriorating for sometime. I do find it interesting that when we were discussing Obama back in 2008; I never stooped to calling you or anyone else on here, stupid, liar or attacking them personally. In fact, I presented the case here online as to why the birther issue was inaccurate. I wish you well.

And I don't think the problem is that the Democrats debate their opponents while shouting slurs. It's that so many Democrats ONLY attack. In list after list I see zero talk of policies or actions just "are you one of the people who are so stupid they voted for Trump?" directed at anyone who says anything they disagree with.
