Do you really believe their sole purpose is to give you the facts? Oh hell no, especially Television media. I've entirely stopped watching TV news, there's simply no way to adequately convey the facts of a situation within the time-frame in which they need to do it."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
airdvr 210 #77 August 17, 2018 I haven't watched MSM for a long time. I do check the news on my iPhone, and GoogleNews, but I read most of it with a healthy dose of skepticism. I also get a lot of it here. Sounds crazy but at least I know I'll get some opposing viewpoints and be able to decide for myself where I come down. Please don't dent the planet. I guess you'd have to ask yourself why the MSM exists. Do you really believe their sole purpose is to give you the facts? For the most part, yes. The CEOs of the private ones, of course, are charged with returning profit to shareholders (dividends) and/or growing as a company (increased stock price). At the end of the day, the product they are selling to consumers is factual news reporting. The ones who best deliver that product tend to be most successful, i.e., become the "MSM". I guess you'd have to ask yourself why capitalism works.Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

billvon 3,131 #81 August 17, 2018 >Do you really believe their sole purpose is to give you the facts? Not at all. For most of them, their primary goal is to make money. Two exceptions to this are the BBC and NPR, which is why I use them preferentially. That being said, they will sell whatever makes them money. If reporting the facts makes them money, then they will do that. (And there are several outlets that do that; local unaffiliated papers are good for that.) If reporting sensational stories make them money, then they will do that. FOX and CNN are good examples there.

billvon 3,131 #84 August 21, 2018 Commentary from former FOX News analyst (and former US Army lieutenant colonel) Ralph Peters: "People that only listen to Fox have an utterly skewed view of reality . . .Fox isn't immoral, it's amoral." The interviewer then played a clip of FOX News defending Trump's move to strip John Brennan's security clearance. He asked if he thought they were proud of that. "The polite word is 'prostitutes,' so I'll just leave it at that." "Trump gives us something new to worry about virtually every day, but it's important not to lose sight of the overall picture. This is a distinctly un-American president who really doesn't seem to like America very much, certainly doesn't respect it. And he's a president who appears to be enthralled to a foreign power, a hostile foreign power. . . [Trump] does not respect our system of government, does not understand it, and does not respect the Constitution." "What we need is people who will speak honestly and say what they believe and not worry about who it offends. I'm just sick and tired of people hedging and hemming and hawing. This is a president of the United States who is a danger to the republic."
Phil1111 1,192 #85 August 24, 2018 Second Fox News reporter leaves network this month http://thehill.com/homenews/media/403403-second-fox-news-reporter-leaves-network-report "On-air senior correspondent Adam Housley has decided to leave... According to Politico, he told other former employees that it is difficult to get "hard reporting" on air because of the network’s focus on President Trump and its number of political commentators... Jerusalem-based correspondent Conor Powell announced earlier this month that he is resigning after 9 years with the news network. “Conor was growing increasingly embarrassed by the channel, by the positions, by the relentless blind defense of Trump,” a friend of Powell told Politico. “If you’re overseas and doing important work like Conor was, you can certainly focus on the work and tell yourself, ‘Hey I’m doing important things and I’m just going to focus on this and ignore all the rest.’ But it just became impossible to ignore." Not that "news" has been part of Fox for the last five years.
