Doasfu 0 #1 June 22, 2001 Got your attention? Good.I am a liberal, tree hugging, card carrying ACLU member. People who are into guns and gun rights scare me. Except that the last sentence isn't true. I still don't really understand those in favor of gun rights, but I don't fear or dislike such people any more, I just disagree with them. What happened? I met some. A whole bunch.Hanging out with my university friends, I lived a pretty sheltered existence most of the time, but that all changed when I started coming out to the DZ. I met people whose politics were wildly different from mine, but we were united by a common interest. I don't bring up gun rights issues with these folks, but I sure do like talking about skydiving with them. What's the point of all this? Just wanted to say that it's possible to put aside differences if one decides they are not the most important thing. We're not going to change anyone's mind here, but I just hope it doesn't make anyone needlessly into enemies.Your pinko friend,Dan"Oh, you went to a movie this weekend? That's nice. Me? Not much." FallingMarc 0 #2 June 22, 2001 YES!! Common sense prevails again! I'm, well, a conservative, dittohead, card-carrying NRA member. But several of my very best friends are flaming liberals. Does that mean we can't hang out without getting into major arguments? Of course not! We have heated debates from time to time, but we still get along. We just realize none of us will change anyone else, so why get mad?Marc
johnny1488 1 #3 June 22, 2001 You cant change people's minds but you can try if yuo like to argue. Polotics arent commonplace at a dz and rightly so cause it would spoil everyones time. Personally i think leftist commie tree hugging anti-everything wackos are the scum of the earth in my non-skydiving life, I make it a point to not get invovled in anyones way of thinking at the dz outside skydiving. I myself am waaaaaay outside the norm so I must be a wacko to many. People dont bother me either so i guess fair is fair. Pinkos are skydivers too.Your anti-pinko friendJohnny

We're not going to change anyone's mind here, but I just hope it doesn't make anyone needlessly into enemies. I have many friends that are pro gun, and many that are anti gun.. I, personally, grew up very active with guns(competition shooter), and continue to be very pro gun.. When the gun debate comes up among friends, I sit it out.. One of my die-hard anti gun friends - whom I have known for over 5 years - was absolutely amazed, and somewhat horrified, when we went to my house one day, and I pulled out a concealed holster/gun and put it in the safe.. For 5 years he never had a clue.. That's the way I like it.. Nobody needs to know.. Will I give up my gun or gun rights? Not a chance.. Carrying a gun quite literally saved my life.. Had I been unarmed, I am 100% sure I would be dead.. You are not going to change my mind..There is no way to eliminate all guns, so let's not even argue the point.. Banning guns will only take them out of the hands of law abiding citizens.. Enforce the penalties for criminals.. Enforce the laws on the books - don't make more.. Take a look at the statistics on crime in states before they began issuing concealed weapon permits, and after.. There is quite a decline in crime.. What does that mean? The criminals don't know who is armed..Mike
Doasfu 0 #5 June 22, 2001 Hey Guys,I don't want anyone to think I was trying to argue for the outlawing of guns. For one thing, I don't believe in the banning of guns, although I do favor some gun control. That's not the point, though, and I'm worried I was unclear. All I was trying to say is that there was a point in my life where I would not be able to look past differences in opinion on an issue like that, but I know now that there are a lot of great people out there who I disagree with, but that this can be overcome.I understand that there are people who can't look past differences like this, and I would be a hypocrite if I criticized anyone for feeling the way I did until recently.Proud Scum of the Earth since 1979,Dan"Oh, you went to a movie this weekend? But seriously, Dan, I wish more people had that attitude... people will disagree on everything under the sun, but the only way things get accomplished is when people look past that. Nothing is helped when people say, "Nope, I'm not gonna think about that. Your opinion does not even exist in my world."Marc

AggieDave 6 #9 June 22, 2001 For me, Gun control is keeping my MOA at an inch at 25yrds...But I guess that's just me and the thousands of others in TX that have their CHL...It's kinda overused, but the saying IS true: If guns are outlawed only the outlaws would have guns. No matter what kind of gun laws are inacted, the people who what to get guns for use in unthinkable acts WILL get them.AggieDave '02-------------Blue Skies and Gig'em Ags!BTHO t.u. Billy 0 #13 June 22, 2001 Frined of mine sent me this today,, B::::Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this!!!!I was listening to the radio the other day, and I heard one of the all-time best comeback lines in my life. Note: This is an exact replication of a National Public Radio (NPR) interview between a female broadcaster, and US Army General Reinwald who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military installation.FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?"GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting."FEMALE INTERVIEWER: "Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?"GENERAL REINWALD: "I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range."FEMALE INTERVIEWER: "Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?"GENERAL REINWALD: "I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm."FEMALE INTERVIEWER: "But you're equipping them to become violent killers."GENERAL REINWALD: "Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?"The radio went silent and the interview ended. And all I could think was,"Go Army"!!

MC208B 0 #20 June 23, 2001 Hey Babyhead! Lighten up! That is simply a takoff on the "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" slogan. Actually, had the only police will have guns bumper sticker on my 60 Ford Falcon way back in 1970. Found it attracted the cops to pull me over all the time :)Promptly got rid of it! Alias 0 #24 June 25, 2001 Sorry, but this I had to comment on.. Here in VA, firearms are a way of life for many of us. Hunting and "plinking" Yes, I am a life member of the NRA and yes I have a conceal permit. I have been entertained many many times from anti-gun individuals who really just regurgitate what some hard left radical has said. My point is the large majority of my fellow shooters are extremely cautious and saftey minded with firearms. I dont know any criminals, so cant speak for them. It is true that loosening the gun laws in FLA and VA have greatly reduced crime in both states. Dont hear any of the media reporting that. And thats the problem!!! Anti-gun comments are typically coming from folks who are so uneducated about them, that they are frightened. Mixed with thier fright and uneducation, they really come from an ignorant position on this debate. Gun safety is where the conversation ends up, at least with a good anti-gun debator. The information below is a great reality that alot of the "other side" forgets. Number of physicians in the US................ 700,000 Accidental deaths caused by phisicians..... 120,000 Accidental deaths per physician............ 0.171 Number of gun owners in US.................... 80,000,000 Number of accidental deaths per gun owners. 1,500 (all ages) Accindental deaths per gun owner............ 0.0000188 Statistically, Doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners. Not everyone has a gun, but everyone has at least one Doctor. Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban Doctors before this gets out of hand. As a Public Health Measure I have withheld the statistics on Lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical aid and see a doctor! Yes, I heard your point and I to can look past differences to jump with some fun folks. But the most fun I ever had jumping is still when we all met and shot for a few hours, then went skydiving. My medication just kicked in, so I;ll keep quite again. Ban spelling!!! Then Pull and Flare!
