President Trump and Evangelicals

This is part of the base I belong to, not surprising. The thing to note is how many people are influenced by a megachurch and how they disseminate information.

Trump is a self-described Presbyterian but does not attend church, though he has been embraced by many evangelicals. While evangelicals vary in their views of Trump, a survey from the Pew Research Center during Trump’s first few months in office found that white Catholics and white evangelicals who attend religious services regularly have a higher approval rating of Trump than those who don’t attend services regularly.

I'm with you somewhat on this Ron. Obama sent all the signs that he was a true believer in Christ Christian. But his policies went against the most of the Christian right wing. Trump shows all the signs of a non-believer, but his politics are simpatico with the right. It actually makes perfect sense to choose the politician that represents your political beliefs over one that merely shares your religious ones. God will sort out the important stuff. Politics are the affair of man, not God.

Not all Christians are conservative like you and yours. You should give progressive Christians a little more credit. Satan did not make them liberals. More likely reading the teachings of Christ did.
Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

I'm not sure, but I think I see what you're saying. I'm liberal, I work and save, I never buy lottery tickets. But touch wood, I've been healthy all my life and I was born in Canada. That's a little like winning the lottery.

It is not just churches, non-profit corporations are big business.

Pastors have to pay income tax and FICA tax on their salaries. They can opt out on FICA if the church has a good retirement plan. Once they opt out they cannot opt back in. At least that was the law back in the mid-'80s when I considered the option.

Evangelical group plans nearly $20 million push ahead of midterms
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/391455-evangelical-group-plans-nearly-20-million-push-ahead-of-midterms

“We are going to make a bigger effort in 2018 than we did in 2016," said Ralph Reed, the chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition....

Reed estimated that the group will make 180 million voter contacts through digital outreach, knocking on people's doors and making phone calls, sending texts, emails and physical mail....

Evangelical voters came out in droves for Trump in the 2016 election, with exit polls showing that 80 percent of Evangelicals had cast their ballots for the Republican businessman. "

Although I am not a fan of the term Evangelical Christian, it is understandable the effort being made by this organization. However, there is one group, Evangelists for Social Change that is pushing more left.

I believe the largest groups voting for President Trump in the next election will be those employed and white middle-class females.

Evangelical Christians are simply non-denominational. IOW, they don't aspire to religious doctrine.

So during the Trump administration, the Oval Office has had visits from Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Kim Kardashian, and Evangelical Pastors "laying hands".

I remember when you used to actually get people of substance/character on White House visits.

I remember only two short years ago when there was a person of substance & character in the West Wing of the White House.

There are some strange subgroups out there in the Evangelical Christian population. I was always amazed at the people who border-line worshipped Elvis after his death. Many of them saw themselves as Evangelicals but saw nothing wrong with holding a man in that much esteem.

I agree. I was an Elvis fan and memorized the words to his first 104 songs before I went into the Air Force. Then I threw away all his recordings because I got tired of moving them around. The money I simply trashed, oh well.

In 1977 I was working in a restaurant in Taos, NM when he died. The news shocked and saddened me but, oh well.

You memorized the first 104 Elvis songs and then joined a structured organization that controlled the day's of your life?

Perhaps you have a natural predilection for verse memorization, adulation and giving yourself over to a higher power. You can not risk conceding the possibility, though it sits before you in your own words, but the tendency may well simply be in your nature.

When I was a kid, I had an aunt who was a Pentecostal, and her adult son was a traveling evangelist. (I'm reminded of him every time I hear "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show").

This woman had scrapbooks full of news clippings about the death of Marilyn Monroe, and at every opportunity would pull them out and bore my mother (her sister) to death talking about it.

I think some people are just wired to worship celebrity.

And the really strange part is that people continued following these false oracles like Marilyn and Elvis even after Ziggy Stardust came out.

Apparently, religious faith and celebrity worship are addictions that are not unlike many others. Thankfully, however, no one is insisting that I organize my one life around the purported divinity of Elvis, make a Hajj to Graceland or accept at my doorstep badly printed copies of his writings. So that's good.

You've gone dark, Ron, as you usually do when things are too close to the bone. You know it's true that humans believe because we are wired to believe. Refute the proposition or agree.

I am very sorry to have disappointed you. My wife and I are enjoying personal time.

I have long believed that I am from the seed of Abraham. Therefore, being wired to believe is a distinct possibility.

That does not mean that I am not supposed to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ just because I am one of the selected given the honor of receiving and accepting it quicker.

You believe you are descended from seed of Abraham? I've never before heard the claim although, admittedly, I travel in less exalted circles. Is that usual amongst those you know and how did you come to believe so? Is it a Galatians thing or something you just know?

I've believed the possibility for a long time. First, I developed a sense of spiritual awareness at an early age. Second, God said that Abraham's seed would be like grains of sand. Third, all born-again Christians are adopted into the family.

You brought up the notion of conjecture about how my brain was wired. I added on to it with my guess in an attempt to confirm your supposition.

So you believe that God created you wired to believe in God so that you would? Do I have that right?
